Suceava is a city in the Bucovina in Romania.

Suceava was once the capital of Moldova in the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, the historical legacy is overshadowed by the many concrete buildings of the communist era. With the St. George's Church in St. John's Monastery, Suceava also has one of the Moldavian monasteries that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

By plane

The small airport is located 8 kilometers east of Suceava Stefan Cel Mare, the tamrom of Bucharest flies to it several times a day (as of 2019). WIZZ Air flies several times a week to London-Luton, Milan-Bergamo and Memmingen. There is also a connection from / to Antalya several times a week. Another international airport is in Iasi, there are also flights from German-speaking countries. From there it is 150 km (2½ hours by car) to Suceava.

The main attractions in the city center (Johanneskloster, Demetriuskirche and the Princely Guest House) are all within walking distance. The fortress and the open-air museum are about 3 kilometers outside.

The city fortress
  • 1  Princely guest house (Hanul Domnesc), Strada Ciprian Porumbescu 5. Tel.: 40 230 216 439. The magnificent building was built as a guest house at the end of the 16th century. Under the Habsburgs it was rededicated as a hunting lodge. There is now an ethnography museum in the building.
  • 2  fortress (Cetatea de Scaun), Aleea Cetății. The fortress was first mentioned in 1388. The fortress was razed by the Turks in 1675 after it had been successfully defended against the Poles (1497) and Turks (1476) in the previous centuries. The fortress had walls 10 meters high and 4 meters thick. Today, white dividing lines separate the original from the restored parts of the fortress.
St. John's Monastery
  • 3  St. John's Monastery (Mănăstirea Sfântul Ioan cel Nou), Strada Ion Vodă Viteazul 1. The patron saint is Saint John from today's Turkey. He died a martyr in 1330 when he did not want to give up his belief even under torture. His bones rest in a shrine in the main room of the Georgskirche (Biserica Sfântul Gheorge) in the cloister courtyard. The monastery church is part of the world cultural heritage of Moldavian monasteries and dates from 1514 and was built by Bogdan III. The exterior paintings are unfortunately only preserved on the west wall and partly on the south wall. The west wall shows the Last Judgment. There are also magnificent paintings inside the church.
  • 4  Demetrius Church (Biserica Sfântul Dumitru), Strada Ștefan cel Mare 1. Unfortunately, only the last faded remains of the exterior frescoes painted in the middle of the 16th century can be seen on the south wall. The church was built in 1535 and the free-standing bell tower was added in 1561. The interior frescoes were restored in 2004.
  • 5  Bukovina Village Museum (Muzeul Satului Bucovinean), Aleea Cetății. Tel.: 40 213 131918, Email: . Not far from the fortress is a small open-air museum dedicated to the architectural heritage of the Bukovina villages. Founded in the communist era, it has undergone major expansion since the late 1990s. You can see mills, pubs and other buildings mostly from the time around 1900. The highlight is a wooden church from 1783 that was previously in Valma was standing.

  • 6  Dragomirna Monastery (Mănăstirea Dragomirna), DJ208U 1. Tel.: 40 230 533839. The monastery is about 10 kilometers north of Suceava behind the town of the same name - follow the signs. The monastery stands free surrounded by high walls on a lake. The dimensions of the monastery church are remarkable. At a height of 42 meters, it is less than 10 meters wide. The monastery was founded and built at the beginning of the 17th century. The monastery never had exterior frescoes, unfortunately only some of the interior frescoes are preserved. Attached is a museum in which you can admire old manuscripts and miniatures from the monastery.
