Molina de Aragon is a city in the Guadalajara Province.

background

During the Reconquista (Recapture) Molina de Aragón was hotly contested. In 1129 Alfonso I of Aragón was able to conquer the Moors. Many buildings were destroyed in the process. Then there was a dispute between Aragón and Castile over the strategically important castle, which Castile won. The castle was called during the 12th and 13th centuries Molina de los Caballeros. It was rebuilt and got its current appearance. After a revolt of the townspeople in the 14th century, which was about their independence, Aragón occupied the castle and town for 6 years. In 1375 both became Castilian again. The castle was used in the following centuries and has therefore been well preserved. In 1810 the French general Roquet set fire to the city. The castle became a refuge for the townspeople in 1875 during the Carlist attacks led by General Vallés. The castle has not been used since the 19th century. It no longer has any meaning.
