Montego Bay is a city in Jamaica.

background

Probably on May 10, 1494 Columbus drove into the bay of Montego Bay for the first time, he named it El Golfo de Buen Tiempo - "Good weather bay". In the years up to 1655, many Spanish ships docked to take food, pork and beef fat, on board. From the Spanish word "manteca“(Bacon) became Montego Bay.

The administrative district of Saint James was founded in 1671, but in 1711 it received an exemption from taxes on the grounds: "No towns, some inhabitants, little trade". It was not until 1754 that the slave trade brought about an upswing in the region and by 1768 Montego Bay was the second largest city after Kingston with 400 buildings.

1795, Montego Bay was now a larger town with shipyards and warehouses, a fire almost completely destroyed the city, only a few houses survived this and others in 1808, 1811 and 1818.

In the 1960s, the islands on the southwestern edge of the port were connected to the mainland by landfills. Over the decades, a deep-water port, the Montego Freeport free trade zone, the marina, hotels and, more recently, villas were built there.

In 1972 the entire waterfront of the city was rebuilt. All old warehouses and port facilities in the city center were demolished. Several acres of land were washed up, and the wide Howard Cooke Drive was built as a bypass. On May 1, 1981, the place then received city rights.

Behind the airport, shops, hotels and restaurants are lined up on Gloucester Avenue, which is now known as the “Hip Strip”. From the hotel zone you can first reach the City Center Building with its duty free shops. Here the main street is now called St. James Street, a few meters further to the right you will find the post office and court. After crossing the "North Gully“, A foul-smelling rainwater sewer is in the city center. The extension of the North Gully inland leads into one of the poor areas of Montego Bay. Tourists should avoid this area at all times of the day and night.

Just two blocks further into town you are on Sam Sharpe Square, the center of town with a fountain. The square was laid out as a parade square as early as 1755 and named after the governor at the time Admiral Charles Knowles Called Charles Square. There are a number of banks in the immediate vicinity of the square.

In the further course the main street makes a sharp bend to the left and joins Barnett Street. Here, too, tourists should not stop at the narrow side streets from the main road. Barnett Street joins the bypass, here called Alice Eldemire Drive, about 3 km away. There is a large commercial area in this area with lots of shops. The sugar cane fields used to start here, the sugar mills were in operation until the 1960s.

On the other side of the city in the northeast behind the airport are the suburbs Coral Gardens (6 km outside), Ironshore (10 km outside) and adjacent the municipality Rose Hall, 14 km from downtown Montego Bay. This area is home to luxury hotels and golf courses.

For the locals, Montego Bay is easy Mobay.

Other goals

The German emigrants

Seaford Town, also known as German Town, is a settlement of German emigrants from the Hameln / Hanover area, several hundred of whom came here around 1835. After the end of slavery, not only were Indian temporary workers brought into the country, Germans were also recruited with windy promises. The site was provided by Lord Seaford. Few of the German immigrants were farmers. No one had any experience with tropical weather conditions, tropical fruits and diseases. Many of them died after a short time, just as many left Jamaica just as quickly and ended up in Canada. Up until the 1960s the number in Seaford Town was around 500, today it is less than half. And they are still predominantly blonde and blue-eyed, because they only got married within their village community.

After a very short time, the Catholic mission station became the center of the village. It was founded in 1837 by a priest from Austria. Today includes the Sacred Heart Mission a primary school, clinic and a technical training center, the latter is funded by the German Federal Government. The place owes its international fame Father Francis Friesen, a Dutch national who led the mission in the 1970s. His activities went far beyond missionary work. He had a mini-museum built on the mission site, between church and school. It documents the whole history of the Germans of Seaford Town.

Seaford Town, the museum, a hot air balloon ride, a Jamaican buffet and rum punch are available on the Hilton High Day Tour in close proximity to Seaford Town, Tuesdays through Fridays and Sundays from Montego Bay.

Anyone with a rental car reaches the place on the District road B 9, from Montego Bay via Reading, Anchovy, Montpelier and Cambridge. The road conditions are quite acceptable.

getting there

At the cruise port

By plane

Sir Donald Sangster International Airport is the hub for holiday flyers. Most of the tourists come from the USA and Canada. But there are also flights to London almost daily and one lands twice a week Condor Machine from Frankfurt. On December 15, 2006, the first phase of the expansion and new construction of the Sangster International Airport was opened. A new terminal wing with modern passenger bridges was built to the east. But the luggage still comes over two completely outdated luggage belts. The departure area with the duty-free shops has also been renewed and relocated. The prices there have since been lowered several times, so that you can now shop there at normal price trips. The departure / airport tax is currently 1,000 Jamaica dollars.

by bus

The central bus station has been located at the intersection of Howard Cooke Boulevard and Barnett Street behind the old fire department for several years. From there mini buses drive on the coastal road via the town of Lucea to Negril. In the opposite direction it goes via Ocho Rios to Kingston. You can also come across the island to Savanna-La-Mar. The so-called Inspector's Office is open there daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. There you can inquire about departure times and locations of the minibuses.

  • Minibus fare to Ocho Rios $ 260 JA; to Lucea 120 JA $, for the Weierfahrt to Negril you have to change there and pay another 100 JA $ for the journey to Negril.
View from the port to Montego Bay

By boat

The port of Montego Bay has been regularly called by cruise ships for years, with a ship coming about every three days. It is relatively rare for two cruise ships to dock in one day. In 1 Cruise terminal At Montego Freeport, generous handling, shopping and land transport facilities were created for this purpose. However, walking downtown is not a good idea.

mobility

Hints

  • 1. Many streets in the city center are one-way streets and are not marked as such.
  • 2. During the rainy season, the water in the otherwise almost dry North Gully can rise very quickly.
  • 3. During heavy rains, the one-way traffic rules are not obeyed, especially in the Barnett Street area one should be very careful.
  • And another note: in the rainy season or after heavy rain, Queens Drive, the road from the airport roundabout over the hill to downtown Montego Bay, may be closed. In the middle area the street is then flooded and the traffic is diverted through the hotel zone, big traffic jam.

Mini buses

The central bus station has been located at the intersection of Howard Cooke Boulevard and Barnett Street for several years. The so-called Inspector's Office should be open daily from 7 am to 6 pm. There you can inquire about departure times and locations of the minibuses.

  • Fares from Montego Bay to:
  • Kingston (approx. 3 1/2 hours drive) 750 YES $
  • Lucea (journey time approx. 1 1/4 hour) 200 YES $
  • Negril (travel time approx. 2 hours, change in Lucea) from Lucea 150 JA $
  • Ocho Rios (driving time approx. 2 hours) 350 YES $

taxi

In Montego Bay you will find taxi stands at the airport and minibus station; on Gloucester Avenue: Corner of Sunset Boulevard and Gloucester Avenue opposite the Royal Decameron Hotel. In the city center, taxis are available at the Harbor Street Craft Market.

The taxi prices are of course aimed at tourists and accordingly overpriced. You have to keep in mind that US $ 10 equals approximately $ 1,300. Fares from Montego Bay to:

  • Airport to the hotel zone 10 US $
  • Greenwood US $ 20
  • Ironshore US $ 15
