The national park was established in 1937 to create a habitat for the extremely rare mountain zebras. After several setbacks, there are now around 300 animals of this species in the park.

- A particular highlight of this park are the extremely rare ones Mountain zebras (engl. Mountain zebra), of which there are only a few hundred in the whole world.
- There are other animal species in the park Black rhinos (Black Rhino), cheetah, white-tailed wildebeest, buffalo, caracal and several species of antelope.
