About

History

Foundation of Bârnova Monastery

Initially, on the place where the Bârnova Monastery is today, the ruler Ieremia Movilă founded around 1603 a small wooden church, dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr Gheorghe. Historian N.A. Bogdan, in his monograph dedicated to the city of Iași, hypothesized that on the current site of the Bârnova Monastery there was previously another older wooden church, from the ruler Ștefan Tomșa II (1611-1615, 1621-1623), hypothesis based on the fact that the church has a bell from 1614, donated by this voivode. Although there are no reliable documents to support this hypothesis, it can still be believed that there was a small wooden church. Other opinions assume that that bell had been ordered for the small church on the Gate, built by Ștefan Tomșa II in the tower at the entrance to the Royal Court from Iași (dedicated to the Holy Trinity).

We have the first testimony about the Bârnova Monastery from the chronicler Miron Costin who praised the diligence and the effort of the faithful voivode Miron Barnovschi-Movilă to build new church places. He built the Barnovschi Monastery in the city of Iași, as well as the Hangu Monastery in the Neamț Mountains, showing a special care for the Dragomirna Monastery, founded by Metropolitan Anastasie Crimca. As Miron Costin, Prince Barnovschi, writes, "What monasteries and churches did they do, in such a short time, not a single gentleman did. others in 20 years, and he in three years. "

Listing the achievements of the ruler Miron Barnovschi on a church level, the chronicler Miron Costin adds that he also built "așijdere and Bârnova, near Iași, which were then destroyed by Dabije-voda". Recalling the ruler's founding, the humanist chronicler emphasizes that "they also weaved Bârnova under his name, under the Pietrăria hill near Iași".

Another testimony is the royal deed written in Iasi in the Chancellery of Prince Miron Barnovschi on November 11, 1628: “Io Miron Barnovschi Voivod, by the mercy of God, lord of the Land of Moldavia. Here they came before my lordship and before all the boyars of my lordship, large and small, my lord's servant, Dima horseman of Tarigrad, of his own free will, unforced by anyone, not oppressed, and they sold his right ocina and vineyard, with wineries and gardens and fenced and with all income. I sold that to the prayers of my reign, to the monks from the Holy Monastery of my reign, newly built, which is called Bârnova, where it is the patron saint of the holy and glorious martyr Ioan cel Nou… He registered in Iași, in 7137 (= 1628), November, 11 days. The lord himself ordered, Barnovschi Voievod.

In 1629, Prince Miron Barnovschi was defeated and fled to Poland, the church not yet finished. Returning to the throne for a short time in 1633, however, Miron Voda was arrested and executed by beheading in Constantinople on July 2, 1633. During his detention, Miron Voda wrote his will, stating that "the Holy Monastery of Barnova , which is begun by us, we see that, after a long time, nothing else will be able to do it, only princely power. help. The wooden monastery that was built first, to have these boyars count it and strengthen it ".

Completion of construction

Bârnova Monastery Church

Gheorghe Balș, after a careful examination of the church, finds that it has been "already completely vaulted" since the time of Miron Barnovschi, voivode Istrate Dabija having only to finish the works, as evidenced by elements of another style existing right at the tower facing.

Prince Eustratie Dabija (1661-1665) and Dafina Doamna have the merit of fulfilling the provision of Miron Barnovschi's Testament, taking over at their expense the completion of the construction of Bârnova Monastery and endowing it with precious odors: cult books, icons and candles. Dabija Vodă died in 7174 (= 1666), being buried in the church whose construction he had completed. The chronicler Ion Neculce mentions that "they took him with all their might with great honor, because they buried him at his monastery, in Bărnova, which is his own, finished; he managed to finish it, because he perished at the Gate ".

Starting with 1662, the Bârnova Monastery was dedicated in turn to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Mount Athos, Mount Sinai, the Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Patriarchate of Alexandria, being administered by Greek monks for a period of 200 years.

In 1678, Mrs. Dafina Dabija donated to the Bârnova Monastery, where her husband was buried, several villages left by him with the language of death; the donation document states that some of these properties had been purchased together with Mrs. Dafina. Two years later, around 1680, Dafina Doamna gave villages, vineyards and gypsies to the Bârnova Monastery, showing that this settlement was started by Miron Barnovschi, but unfinished, remaining in this state “until the reign of Mary His late my lord , what is written above, to Evastratie Dabija voda, the chariots together with us, by divine encouragement, we built the church to perfection, and with others, how many to fall to the holy monastery ornaments and settlements being to grab it death, they did not manage to adorn and fear it, what we in our life, when we had time, we had to and adorned and we founded it as much as possible with everything that some saints of the monastery needed ".

In 1728, Prince Grigore II Ghica moved temporarily with his entire court to Bârnova, especially to avoid the path of the cold epidemic that haunted Iasi during his reign. The Ghiculeștilor Chronicle tells us that the ruler made various arrangements here, rebuilt the buildings inside which were completely degraded and erected a fencing wall with battlements and a watchtower. "And seeing Grigore Voda, there at the monastery, the ruined and deserted houses…, he started at his own expense and made some wonderful houses and a large mill built with stone around and above the mill porch as seen."

Bârnova Monastery had many estates, including Buhaiul, Cascariu, Dumbrăvița, Puângeni (Dorohoi County), Bâlca, Păunești, Borșani, parts of Fierbinți and Haret (Putna County), Capotești, Petrești, Scânteia, Valea Satului, Belcești and Philosopher (Vaslui County), Iezerul de la Dorohoi etc.

The decline of the monastery

On September 15, 1863, through the effect of the Law on the secularization of monastic assets, the domains and assets of the monastery became the property of the state, while the Palace of Mrs. Dafina was transformed into the village school and parish house. As a result of the loss of property that brought income to the monastery and the departure of the monks to other monasteries, the church was ruined, the iconostasis rotting completely. The first series of restoration works were carried out in 1875.

Subsequently, in 1902, a series of interior repairs were carried out and the iconostasis was replaced at the expense of the parish priest Gh. Mereuță and his wife, Eufrosina, through the efforts of the economist I. Mitescu from Iași. On this occasion, a metal plaque was placed on the eastern wall of the porch, with the following inscription: new together with other internal repairs at the expense of the humble parish priest GH. MIREUȚĂ and his wife EFROSINA, through the efforts of the Economist I. Mitescu from Iași, in the islands of HIS MAJESTY CAROL I KING OF ROMANIA, under the Archdiocese of His Holiness PARTHENIE MITROVE ".

In the early twentieth century, the historian N.A. Bogdan expressed his regret that this historical monument was ignored by his contemporaries. "What a pity that a monument as beautiful as this one, so imposing, durable and worthy of being researched by the world, has been deserted for years, because no one in the Romanian world knows it, as it is located in solitude in which it is found, and with the indifference of those who should watch over such holy places. "

In two periods: 1908-1945 and 1950-1990, the place of worship had the status of a parish, and between 1945-1950 it was a nunnery.

During the intervention of the Historical Monuments Commission, between 1968-1970, restoration works were carried out on the historical monument. During that period, the bell tower at the entrance was restored and the sheet metal on the roof of the church was replaced with galvanized sheet metal.

In July 1991, after a period of leaving the monastery during the communist regime, during which time the church and the Royal Palace of Mrs. Dafina began to fall into ruin, the monastic tradition returned to Bârnova, Metropolitan Daniel Ciobotea of Moldavia and Bucovina restoring its status of the monastery of monks and giving a blessing to the hieromonk Calistrat Chifan to take care of the reorganization of the monastery. Since 1997, the abbot of the monastery is the protosinghel Paisie Furdui, and the Monastery has a young monastic community.

Hieromonk Calistrat Chifan, the clergyman who dealt with the rebirth of monastic life in Bârnova, was placed under the canon in 2003, forbidding him to officiate religious ceremonies and holy mysteries. The monk was accused of disobedience to hierarchs, the cutting of monks in monasticism without respect for church canons, the uncanonical use of goods brought to the monastery by the faithful, the slander and discrediting of hierarchs and priests. After a six-year canon, on March 1, 2009, the Diocesan Consistory decided to release him from the canon, moving him to the Vladiceni Monastery.
