Ciolanu Monastery is a monastic settlement located in Buzau county, Muntenia, Romania.

Historic

The monastery dates from the end of the 16th century. According to tradition, it was founded in 1590 by Mrs. Neaga, the wife of Prince Mihai Turcitul, but other documents of the time indicate as founders the boyars Dumitru Ciolanu from Transylvania and Radu and Dragomir Sorescu from Vernești, in 1568.

The new church

The new church was built in 1828 and is dedicated to the "Holy Apostles Peter and Paul". It houses several icons made in 1886 by the painter Gheorghe Tattarescu, a pioneer of neoclassicism in Romanian painting, nephew of Nicolae Teodorescu Pitarul, head of the painting school in Buzau. Ciolanu Monastery is on the list of historical monuments in Romania.

In the immediate vicinity of the monastery is the Sculpture Camp from Magura, established at the initiative of the sculptor Gheorghe Coman, with the support of the Union of Visual Artists in Romania.
