Cocoș Monastery is a monastic settlement from Tulcea county, Dobrogea, Romania.

Historic

The monastery was built in 1833 on Cocoșului hill, on a land bought by three Romanian monks from Neamț Monastery, Visarion, Gerontius and Isaiah. In 1841, the three monks are recognized as the founders of the Cocoș Monastery, a place of prayer that would become the spiritual center of the Romanians in Dobrogea.

The "Assumption" church of the monastery

In 1853, next to the old church built of earth and twigs, the foundation of the stone church was laid, both lasting until 1910, when, no longer being able to be consolidated, they were demolished. At the end of 1911 the construction of the large church begins which will last until the autumn of 1913. The church is a massive stone construction in the shape of a cross, with an open porch supported by six massive columns, one closed, narthex, nave and altar. The nave is delimited by the narthex through two pillars, one on each side. The interior fresco of the church is made in neo-Byzantine style by the Italian painter F. de Biasse, and the chapel is painted by the local iconographer, Cordas. The architectural ensemble of the Cocoș Monastery is on the list of historical monuments in Romania.
