The Northern Sporades, also as Magnesian Islands are a group of islands in the northern Aegean.

background

The term Sporades has been common since ancient times and denotes islands that are "scattered" in the Aegean lie, in contrast to the Cyclades. One distinguishes the northern Sporades in the northern part of the Aegean in contrast to the southern Sporades, which lie off the Turkish coast and mostly to the archipelago Dodecanese belong. Otherwise the term Sporades is used for other archipelagos in the South Pacific (see Wikipedia article).

Of the approximately 130 islands in the Northern Sporades are primarily the four main islands of tourist interest. These are:

While Skyros is administratively part of the Euboea prefecture in Central Greece belongs, the three other islands together with their smaller neighboring islands form the Sporades district in the prefecture Thessaly.

On the Sporades you almost never have problems communicating with English or German in the tourist centers. In more rural areas or in monasteries, knowledge of Greek is clearly an advantage.

On each of the tourist islands there are good public bus connections and rental cars, mopeds, etc.

Tourist Attractions

The beautiful nature and the first-class beaches are the main attractions. There are no significant ancient sites. The islands are very popular with sailors because of the many bays.

Beach tourism and popular water sports are the main activities. The islands are suitable for rest and relaxation. Only Skiathos has a noteworthy nightlife.

security

As in all Greek islands, crime is very low. Pickpockets do happen and you should watch out for your bags and cell phones when hawkers come to your table in a cafe or restaurant. Venomous snakes like to live on rocks and in secluded dilapidated gardens and houses. If you want to go off the beaten track, you should be careful.

climate

The main season is from June to the end of August. The pre-season starts from May, the post-season until the end of October.
