Nabeghlavi is a village in Guria on the well-developed regional road from Chochatauri to Bachmaro. The mineral water of the same name, which is obtained and bottled locally, is internationally known - market leader in Georgia even before the world-famous one Borjomi. In the village itself there was a small spa with accommodation and sanatoriums during the Soviet era, but nothing is left of that today.

background

About 25 km south of the district capital Chochatauri The mineral water source on the Gubaseuli river has been used for several decades. The water is of high quality and was known throughout Eastern Europe during the Soviet era. A few simple accommodation facilities and a spa park were built around the source. After the end of the Soviet Union, the tourist infrastructure fell into disrepair. The export of water stagnated and the Russian embargo on Georgian products after 2008 hit the village hard.

Since 2014 - at the same time as the import embargo from Russia was abolished - the bottling plant in a Georgian-Swiss-Austrian joint venture has been expanded according to the most modern aspects and the water has also been exported to the EU for a short time. However, the population has little of the economic miracle of one of the few Georgian flagship companies, as the bottling process is largely fully automated.

getting there

Nabeghlavi is located on the well-developed but winding regional road შ 81 of Chochatauri (approx. 24 km) after Bachmaro (approx. 27 km). Disregarding jeep routes over the mountains, the road from Chochatauri is the only way to reach Nabeghlavi. Minibuses leave at least in the warm season Osurgeti or Tschochatauri several times a day to Bachmaro and also pass Nabeghlavi. In winter there are fewer bus connections, as Bachmaro cannot be reached due to the altitude - but the road is always passable as far as Nabeghlavi.

Tourist Attractions

Statue of Bugara Mamaladze in the village of Khevi

There is a small park with a cased spring right next to the bottling plant, where the mineral water can be taken free of charge and untreated. This work is also the landmark of the place, which is almost overwhelming in terms of dimensions for the narrow valley.

In the neighboring villages, the statue of Bughara Mamaladze in the village of Khevi (7 km north) is worth mentioning, a robber who is revered by the local population as a kind of "Robin Hood". The statue has been painted gold since summer 2017.

About 15 km south on the upper reaches of the Gubaseuli (from the regional road from Kvabgha approx. 9 km gravel) there are still the castle ruins "Gomisziche" and an old mosque in the village of Zoti.

activities

There is no tourist infrastructure in Nabeghlavi. The mountains are ideal for hiking, mountain biking and climbing and the rivers for rafting, but you have to do it on your own. There are no signs, tour operators, equipment, etc.

shop

There is a small mini market in the village and several families sell homemade honey and honey vodka. On the main street there are also some small stalls for mineral water and snacks in the summer season, that's about it. The next larger supermarket with an extensive selection is located in Chochatauri.

kitchen

A bottle of Nabeglavi mineral water

The mineral water Nabeglavi is world-famous and is now also exported to the EU. In the village you can get the water at the spring free of charge, there are no factory outlets. There are also no restaurants. Only in summer is kukuruz (tzcheli simindi) cooked by older women at the spring in the park (1-1.50 lari). If you are hungry, you have to rely on snacks and chocolate bars from the mini market, or you drive 25 km Chochatauri, there is the closest restaurant.

There are trout farms in the neighboring village of Kvabgha and a village further on in Chkhakaura (both further on the road to Bachmaro). You can buy live trout (1 kg 13 Lari), but you have to kill and eviscerate them yourself.

There is another mineral water spring in Zoti, but the Sanislia brand is only marketed in Georgia.
