Nahariyah (Hebrew נהריה), often in other spellings such as Nahariya or Nahariyya, is a city in the north Israel. Due to its location on the Mediterranean Sea, the city is a popular travel destination.

background

The Ga'aton river by the beach promenade

Modern Nahariya has existed since 1934; It was founded by Jewish emigrants from Germany. During the Israeli War of Independence in 1948, the city was cut off from the rest of the country; At that time it was surrounded by Arab settlements and could therefore only be supplied by boats from Haifa. In the past few years, Nahariya has been hit with rockets several times from nearby Lebanon; most recently in January 2009 in connection with the Gaza war.

Naharija is considered a beautiful seaside resort; the first settlers opened small hotels for bathers.

getting there

By train

Nahariya can be reached via the coastal line of the Israel Railways (Israel Railways / Rakevet Israel). The city is the start and end station of two intercity lines; there is no passenger traffic beyond Naharija station. One of the two lines runs from Nahariya over Akko, Haifa, the Carmel Coast, Tel Aviv and the Ben-Gurion airport to Modi'in, the other takes the same route to Tel Aviv, but then continues via Lod Beersheba. With both intercity connections together, approximately one hour intervals are reached.

By bus

Nahariya is very well connected to Haifa by buses. The buses run several times an hour during the day from the central bus station (Central Bus Station / CBS) along the coast via Akko and the cities on the Bay of Haifa (the so-called "Krajot") to the central bus station "HaMifrats" in northern Haifa. In Haifa there are connections to the entire Israeli bus network (in Haifa it may be necessary to change to the central bus station “Chof haKarmel” in the south of the city, see Notes in the relevant section at Haifa). There are only a few connections from Nahariya to northeast Israel or the northern Jordan Valley.
