Naples (Italian: Naples /'napoli/) is the largest city in the Southitaly.

Understand

General location of Naples

Naples lies on a fairly wide gulf belonging to the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the southern part of the Italian peninsula.

The tourist interest of Naples and its economy depends heavily on the sea, though not only on it.

The surrounding country is volcanic in origin: dozens of craters, most of which have never been active in historical times, are not only around the city but also within its borders. Very close and easily visible is the largest crater in the area, Vesuvius, a volcano currently dormant but not inactive.

Naples is the third largest city in Italy in terms of population, after Rome and Milan.

Climate

The climate of Naples is Mediterranean, with rainy winters and dry summers.

In the center and near the sea, in winter the temperature at night is often around 10 ° C but can drop to 0 ° C; during the day it is usually around 15 ° C but on hot winter days it can exceed 20 ° C. In summer the temperature is usually between 20 ° C and 32 ° C but can exceed 40 ° C during the hottest days.

In the hills (neighborhoods Vomero, Capodimonte, etc.) the climate is slightly colder.

On average there are 78 rainy days a year: in summer, only 2-3 each month, in winter usually at least 10 in each of November, December and January. Snow is very rare (only in the hills).

History

The two ancient cities: Parthenope and Neapolis

The name Naples originates from its ancient name, Εάπολις / ne'apolis /, Greek name with the simple meaning of "new city" (nea = new police = city).

“New city” implies the existence of some “old” city. And yes, the old town existed and lay on a nearby hill that is today part of the present town, as well as the tiny plain where the “new” lay. The old town was named Αρθενόπη / parthe'nopi / and was founded almost at the end of the 8th century BC. by the Greeks of Kumo; it has become minor since the end of the 6th century BC.

The new city, Neapolis, was founded between 520 BC. and 500 B.C.

In 326 B.C. Rome conquered Naples, but left it enough liberties. In Naples, Greek (and Oscan) continued to be spoken under Rome, until at least the beginning of the Roman Empire.

After the fall of the Roman Empire (476 AD), Naples remained for several decades under the Ostrogoths, but in 536 it was captured by the Byzantines and, except for a short time (543-552), it remained under them officially for several centuries. . By the 7th century, however, the Duke of Naples, who represented the Byzantine emperor on the spot, had in fact become an independent ruler.

In 1137 the Normans, having already conquered the adjoining areas, also captured the Duchy of Naples. Naples thus became part of the kingdom of Sicily, with Palermo as its capital.

When, in 1282, Charles I was expelled from Palermo, he moved to Naples; since then he and the later rulers have been called "kings of Naples". Naples, already rich as an important trading port, grew greatly due to its added role of royal capital.

In 1442 Naples was conquered by the Crown of Aragon and, after its merger with Castile, became under Spain. The new role of Naples was the capital of the viceroyalty.

From 1734 Naples was again the capital of an independent kingdom, which also included Sicily. The first king, Charles, although theoretically king of Naples and Sicily, preferred to use the name "king of both Sicily". The independent Kingdom of the two Sicilies lasted until 1860 (though interrupted by Napoleon for a few years); since then, Naples has belonged to the united Italy.
