Necochea is a port city with many beaches in the south of the argentinian province Buenos Aires. It is very popular as a travel destination and also offers more natural attractions than most other holiday resorts on the Atlantic. The population is around 90,000.
Originally, Necochea only included the district west of the Río Quequén, the eastern part, today's district Quequén, was a city in its own right. Today both places are united in one municipality, Quequén has, however, retained its own, less touristy flair.
background
Necochea is the only seaside resort in Argentina that was not built with this purpose, but was originally a purely port and industrial city. The actual city center is about three kilometers away from the sea, for example. But after resourceful tour operators began to exploit the tourist potential in the middle of the 20th century, a new center was built directly on the beach. Gastronomy and trade are concentrated there today - the old center often looks almost sleepy.
The location on the river Río Quequén, at the mouth of which the port is located, gives Necochea its own character.
