Netanya (Hebrew: נתניה, also Netanya or rarely Nathania) is a city on the Mediterranean Sea in Israel. The city is a well-known seaside resort and the capital of the Sharon plain.

background

Netanya is one of the most important seaside resorts on the Israeli Mediterranean coast; the city is about 30 kilometers north of Tel Aviv. Founded in 1929, Netanya was initially a simple village that took its name in honor of Nathan Straus received, a Jewish-American merchant and philanthropist. Whereas earlier the one further north Hadera was the most important city in the area, today Netanya is the capital of the fertile and agriculturally intensively used Sharon Plain, which extends around the city.

Netanya is of particular interest to tourists because of its 10-kilometer-long beaches, which - a special feature of this stretch of coast - lie below cliffs that are up to 30 meters high. Another important industry in the city is (as in Ramat Gan) the diamond grinding shop.
