History
The oldest written record of Nevele reads Niviala (late 9th century in a copy of 941). This name probably contains the Celtic nevia-ialo meaning "new land", or "newly cleared land".
Although archaeological finds indicate prehistoric and Gallo-Roman habitation, Nevele mainly writes history from the Middle Ages.
The Land van Nevele was then one of the most important lordships of the Oudburg castellan in the county of Flanders. It then consisted of several villages and was governed by the lords of Nevele. The capital of Het Land van Nevele was the village of Nevele itself, which had the status of city and freedom. This is derived from the oldest preserved seal of Nevele dated June 21, 1316. The text reads as follows (translation): "seal of the aldermen of the city of Nevele in Flanders". Nevele was therefore already a town in the time of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, which points to early trading activities.
The lord of Nevele lived in the center of Nevele in the 11th - 12th century in a fortified castle near the church. During the Battle of Nevele on May 13, 1381, the castle, the church and most of the houses of Nevele were destroyed by war. The lord of Nevele then took up residence in the Ooidonk Castle in Bachte-Maria-Leerne. In 1452 another battle took place. The old castle was completely demolished in 1488-1489, except for the residential tower (donjon). Two walls of this residential tower are still standing (Cyriel Buyssestraat 6).
During the religious wars in the 16th century, Nevele and the surrounding area suffered greatly from looting and iconoclasm. The most famous lord of Nevele and count of Hoorne, Philip van Montmorency, was beheaded together with count of Egmont as a result of this battle in Brussels in 1568. The seigniory of Nevele was forfeited and Nevele was able to recover from these blows with difficulty.
It was not until the 18th century that an improvement was noticeable, but the 19th century was black and hopeless again. The Schipdonk Canal was dug in 1847.
Both world wars in the 20th century left a trail of destruction.
cores
Nevele consists of six boroughs, namely Nevele center, Hansbeke, Landegem, Merendree, Poesele and Vosselare. The village centers of Nevele and Vosselare have grown together somewhat, but are still separated by the Schipdonk Canal.
