Newquay (Cornish: Tewynn Pleustri) is a city in the county Cornwall, one of the most remote regions of England. Newquay is particularly popular with holidaymakers thanks to its long sandy beaches and pleasant, almost tropical temperatures in summer. Plus, the city is the place to go surfing in the UK.
background
Even if people first settled in the region in the Bronze Age, Newquay remained very quiet for a long time. First evidence of today's Newquay comes from the year 1439, when the inhabitants of the former fishing village asked Bishop Lacey of Exeter to build a new pier - a "new quay" - to protect the boats from unfavorable winds. In the 19th century already 1,300 people lived in this place. The main source of income at that time was sardines, which were shipped all over Europe, of which, however, there are none left today. Only now and then does a boat go out to catch crabs. Newquay experienced a renewed upswing from 1846 when a goods connection from the inland to the port was built, which was served by horse-drawn vehicles. Later it became a real railway connection, which increasingly brought summer vacationers to the coast. Nowadays there are around 20,000 people in Newquay, but that number can easily increase fivefold with all the visitors in the summer.
