background
London Gatwick Airport opened in 1930 and is now the second largest airport in London after Heathrow, with around 45 million passengers per year. It is also the world's largest airport with only one runway. The airport has two terminals. The South Terminal was opened in 1958 and has been modernized and rebuilt many times since then. The North Terminal opened in 1988.
getting there
By train
A number of rail lines connect Gatwick with central London. The 1 Gatwick Airport train station is located directly on South Terminal.
- The Gatwick Express connects the airport to London Victoria train station in the city center in 30 minutes, not far from the Buckingham Palace and Westminster. Trains run every 15 minutes. A one-way ticket costs £ 16.90.
- First Capital Connect connects Gatwick with London's inner city train stations London Bridge and Kings Cross, as well as Bedford to the north and Brighton to the south. Wide providers are CrossCountry, Southern, Southeastern and First great westernconnecting Gatwick with the surrounding area and London. Due to the large number of providers, some of which serve the same routes, it is advisable to search for the timetable on the website of National Rail. For example, the Southern Railway the large transfer stations Croydon and Clapham Junction in south west London.
By bus
Buses from express connect Gatwick with the airports Heathrow, Stansted and the city center. There are also a number of regional bus connections to the surrounding area. All buses run from the bus station in the South Terminal.
A hotel shuttle, which many accommodations offer themselves, is more exclusive.
With the taxi
The taxi rank is in front of the South Terminal. The travel time to London is about 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the traffic situation. Since taxis take a long time to get to the city center and are relatively expensive, they are only recommended for trips to the immediate vicinity of the airport.
In the street
The airport is about 40 kilometers south of central London. The highway connects the airport directly with the London ring road, 15 kilometers away
which has highways leading into all parts of England. There is a high risk of congestion on both motorways due to the high volume of traffic. All major car rental companies are represented at the airport.

security
mobility
A free elevated train runs between the North and South Terminals and takes about two minutes to travel between the terminals. The departure points are sparingly signposted and the platform on the first floor is difficult to recognize as such (see picture). When the train arrives, automatic doors in the wall open to allow disembarkation on the outside and then boarding from the center aisle.
There are special facilities for passengers switching from one flight to another in Gatwick. Precise instructions for the fastest connections between two flights can be found on the airport website [1]. The airport operator recommends planning at least 1½ hours for transfer connections.
activities
For smokers it should be noted that smoking is prohibited in all airport buildings. Smoking is only allowed in front of the terminals, which means that if you have a transfer connection you have to check out first and then check in again, including all security checks.
