Map of Nidderau

background

Like many other Hessian cities, Nidderau is a new development from the 1970s. It consists of the following formerly independent municipalities:

  • Windecken (formerly the city)
  • Ostheim
  • Heroes Mountains
  • Oak trees
  • Hereditary City

Windecken and Ostheim were historically part of the Kinzig valley in the broader sense, while Heldenbergen, Eichen and Erbstadt are traditionally weatherweave. Until recently there was no central city center for the large community, the five districts were clearly separated from each other. Only recently has a new town center been built in the open field between Windecken and Heldenbergen.

Windecken, with its well-preserved historic town center, is particularly important for tourism, but the other districts should not be spurned either.

getting there

By plane

By train

Nidderau is a regional rail hub with several train stations. The naming of the train stations generally adds to the confusion of travelers.

  • The 1 Heldenbergen-Windecken station is the central train station of the city of Nidderau. This is where the Hanau-Friedberg and Bad Vilbel-Stockheim railway lines intersect. Regional trains run every hour or even half an hour, during rush hour there are direct connections from Frankfurt Hbf to Nidderau. Otherwise, you usually have to change trains in Bad Vilbel or Hanau. The train station is quite remote, so if you want to go into town you have to walk or take the city bus.

There are also the following stations on the Bad Vilbel-Stockheim railway line:

  • 2 Windecken station (without "Heldenbergen-" in front of it)
  • 3 Oak train station

The last one is on the Hanau-Friedberg railway line 4 Ostheim train station (Kr Hanau).

By bus

In the street

The federal highways cross in Nidderau B45 and B521. The next connection points are Symbol: AS 36 Hanau-Nord on the A66 (approx. 15 km south) and Symbol: AS 39 Altenstadt an der A45 (approx. 10 km east).

With the construction of a bypass road around Nidderau, the constant daily traffic jam in the city has finally come to an end. For this purpose, a road was created that is regionally regarded as a "deadline" and has already claimed 10 lives in its short period of existence.

mobility

The districts are adequately connected to each other by bus connections. In view of the sometimes quite large distance between the districts, the use of the buses is advisable.

There are several signposted visitor parking spaces for visitors to Windeck's old town, otherwise parking in Nidderau is absolutely unproblematic.

Tourist Attractions

Churches

  • 1  Windecken Collegiate Church, Church square 1. The designation as a collegiate church is based on a historical error; there was never a pen in wind corners. The name has been used to this day for the local Protestant church. The church itself is first documented for the 13th century, some parts of the church still date from this time, while others after the destruction, among other things. were rebuilt in the Thirty Years War.
  • 2  Evangelical Church Ostheim, Vorderstraße 10. The Protestant church in Ostheim, like the church in Windecken, dates from the 13th century. Only a few Gothic frescoes remain from this period, which were uncovered in the 1960s. The church was almost completely destroyed in the Thirty Years War and only rebuilt in the 18th century.
  • 3  Catholic Church of the Annunciation, Friedberger Strasse 2-4. Due to its historical affiliation to Kurmainz, Heldenbergen is the only Catholic place in the entire region; all surrounding villages, like Wetterau and southern Hesse, are generally Protestant. The current church dates from the 18th century and replaced an older medieval church. In particular, the rich interior and the north window from 1914 are worth seeing.
  • 4  Evangelical Church Erbstadt, Hauptstrasse 10a. The church is a typical hall church from the 17th century. The three lead glass windows from 1997 and the historic organ from the time the church was built are particularly worth seeing.

Castles and Palaces

  • 5  Windecken Castle, Schlossbergstrasse 7. Two castle gates and parts of the outer bailey with the witch tower are still preserved from Windecken Castle. The castle is now used for residential purposes and is therefore not open to the public.
  • 6  Oberburg Heldenbergen, Windecker Strasse 18. The castle in Heldenbergen goes back to a medieval castle, which was first mentioned in the 12th century. In the 17th century the complex was converted into a contemporary castle and after several changes of ownership it came into the ownership of the von Leonhardi family, who still live in the castle today.
  • 7  Naumburg Castle. Naumburg Castle, southwest of Erbstadt, emerged from a former Benedictine monastery from the 11th century. The complex was destroyed in the 16th century and rebuilt shortly afterwards, but then the monastery fell into disrepair. Finally, the complex came to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel, whose Prince Georg von Hessen-Kassel had the former monastery demolished in favor of a hunting lodge. After Hesse-Kassel was conquered by Prussia, the hunting lodge changed hands several times. Today the entire complex is left to decay, the castle is in acute danger of collapsing and, according to structural engineers, will also collapse in a few years.

Buildings

  • 8  Old Town Hall Windecken, Marketplace 1. According to a building inscription, the former town hall in Windecken dates from 1520, but estimates suggest it could be even older. Today the building is used by the city library of the city of Nidderau.
