Nisyros (Greek. Νίσυρος, [ˈNisirɔs]) is one greek Volcanic island in the Aegean. As part of the archipelago Dodecanese Nisyros likes to be overlooked. However, it is worth spending a few days here, especially when the tourist crowds of the surrounding islands get too much.

Most guests only come off for a few hours Kós over. You cross in the morning, visit the craters in the volcano and the village of Mandraki. In the afternoon the excursion boats leave again and Nisyros returns to the usual calm. In contrast to most of the islands of the Aegean Sea that are developed for tourism, you can take part in the original Greek life on Nisyros, especially in the off-season.

background

Mandraki village square
Nikia village square

There are three villages across the island. The main town Mandraki is on the north coast right next to the port. Most of the hotels and restaurants are also located here. The village square is one of the few in Greece that still looks like it used to. This is where the village meets and you can enjoy the warm evenings. Several restaurants with traditional Greek dishes can be found on the square.

There are two other, albeit much smaller, villages on Nisyros. The village Emborio is located on the edge of the crater, and dozens of white houses can already be seen from afar on the way there. By car you can only get to a parking lot in front of the village, then narrow alleys and stairs. From various places you have an excellent view of the caldera and the rest of the island.

In 1933 an earthquake destroyed the village of Emborio, and various crumbling buildings can still be seen today. The residents only partially rebuilt the village, many moved to Mandraki, and another group founded the village of Pali. Today there is a lot of construction and renovation going on in Emborio, as many of the houses are now being sold and rented as holiday homes.

The village is also enthroned on the edge of the crater Nikia. From here there is also a spectacular view of the steaming crater. There are several restaurants, one of them on the beautiful little village square. There is also a café there. In Nikia there is a volcano museum which explains the geology of the island and the volcano.

Almost 5 km on the road from Mandraki to the east is the small fishing village Pali to find. There is a car and motorcycle rental company, several small hostels and restaurants. If you follow the road further along the shore you will reach the treeless beach, the only sandy beach on the island.

Of course, Greek is spoken in Nisyros, but English and German are usually quite good too. Due to the hospitality and the cordiality of the population, there is always an opportunity to communicate even with a lack of language skills.
