Map of the North Pole.

The Arctic is the northernmost point on Earth. A planet's geographic north pole is the northern intersection of its axis of rotation with the surface. For Earth, this point is located in the Arctic Ocean.

Info

The North Pole, and a large area around it, is covered in ice. However, this is not land ice like on Antarctica and Greenlandbut sea ice. This sea ice is on average between 1 and 4 meters thick and consists of frozen ocean water. The thickness of the sea ice depends on the air temperature and the temperature of the water directly under the ice. In summer, the total surface of sea ice in the Arctic decreases significantly due to the sharp rise in air temperature.

Arrive

Robert Edwin Peary, Matthew Henson and four Inuit named Ootah, Seegloo, Egingway and Ooqueah are generally considered to be the first people to reach the North Pole, this happened on April 6, 1909 (however, that claim is controversial).

Travel around

Arctic

Snowshoes and a dog sled are the only useful means of getting around in the North Pole. It is also advisable to travel in a group on the inhospitable ice field.

To look at

The Arctic ice sheet is mostly flat, but interesting ice and snow formations can be seen here and there. A special feature of the North Pole is that there is only one sunrise and one sunset per year. However, the chances are very small that that will just happen the moment you get there. Perhaps the tour guides plant a pole in the ice to indicate where the North Pole is; however, this is unofficial and only meant to be able to take a nice picture.

It's very unusual for polar bears to move this far north; they prefer to stay near the "coastal plains" of the ice sheet where they can swim better.

To do

Drink a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate reaching the North Pole.

To buy

You can't buy anything in the North Pole, so bring everything you need.

Food

You or the travel agency will have to bring everything yourself. Reaching the geographic North Pole is traditionally celebrated with a caviar feast.

stay overnight

Despite the fact that there is no permanent infrastructure in the North Pole, heated tented camps can be set up where you can stay for one or more nights. Specialist shops can supply heated tented camps usually used for lengthy expeditions on the ice.

all around

From the North Pole you can only go south in all directions.
