From 1991 to February 2019 the country had a dispute with Greece about his name. Greece feared territorial claims over the region of Greece, which is traditionally called Macedonia. Greece therefore blocked access from Northern Macedonia to European Union and NATO. That is why Northern Macedonia was internationally recognized as Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. In 2018 the governments of the 2 countries provisionally agreed on the new name Republic of Northern Macedonia and the new name has been in use since February 2019.
