the North of Reunion is often referred to as the "North and East" for geographic reasons. Limited to the north at Saint-Denis by a natural barrier of basalt cliffs and to the east by the end of the 4-way road which allows rapid travel by car.

We often arrive in Reunion from the North, and it can be a good plan before plunging into the wild depths of the Grand-Est or the heights of the island.

Understand

The North is, with the South West, one of the two economic and industrial centers of Réunion. There is the Chef-Lieu, the Bois-Rouge sugar factory, and numerous administrations. We are on the windward coast. it rains more often than in the West, but the sun is still shining a lot.

The relief is less steep, while gentle slopes covered with lush vegetation. The many gullies offer a plethora of pools and waterfalls for swimming, which compensates for the lack of beaches.

Hiking

La Roche Written

The start is located in the heights of Saint-Denis. It's a tough but rewarding hike. At the start, we cross a thick humid forest (and sometimes muddy), a rocky mountainous plateau and we arrive at the famous Roche Written with thousands of graffiti of hikers and one of the most beautiful points of view of the island (on Salazie and the Piton des Neiges).

It is possible to make the return trip in one day for good walkers. The others can stop off halfway up at the Plaine d'Affouche gite. You can also spend the night there in a tent, if you want to go up with a tent.

Piton Fern

Departure in the heights of Sainte-Marie, we go up through a beautiful primary forest at first, then a magnificent forest of white Tamarind wood. We arrive at a point of view almost as impressive as that of the Roche Written on Salazie and the Piton des Neiges.

To buy

The big market of St Denis contains all the memories you need.

The Vanille cooperative, in Bras-Panon, will provide you with guaranteed vanilla products from Reunion. Note that most of the vanilla in the markets is of Malagasy origin.
