New Caledonia (in French: Nouvelle-Caledonie) is an overseas territory of France at Melanesia, located in the Pacific Ocean, in the coral sea, east of the Australia and west of Vanuatu. The territory consists of a main island, called the great earth (grand terre), the archipelago of Loyalty Islands (Îles Loyaute), as well as numerous small sparsely populated islands and atolls.
