Novosibirsk has 1.5 million inhabitants, making it the third largest city in Russia and the first of Siberia. It is the capital ofNovosibirsk Oblast.

Founded in 1893 under the name of Novonikolaïevsk (Новониколаевск), it experienced tremendous growth throughout the XXe century reaching one million inhabitants in the 1960s.Asia, the "Russian Chicago" has most of the attributes of European cities. Populated mainly by Russians, its location makes it a privileged destination for ex-RSS migrants.
From the 1950s and the founding ofAkademgorodok, Novosibirsk becomes the nerve center of scientific research in Siberia.
- 1 Akademgorodok (Академгородок, academic city) – Although 20 km southeast of the city center, Akademgorodok is a district of Novosibirsk. Built in the middle of the woods, it is one of the most important scientific centers in Russia and nicknamed "Silicon Taiga".

- 1 Tolmachevo Airport (IATA: OVB, Аэропорт Толмачёво) (16 km to North-east) – this is the preferred method if you want to get to Novosibirsk quickly from abroad. The S7 company offers regular connections to Moscow.
By train
- 2 Novosibirsk Station – The station is served by the mythical Trans-Siberian, if you come from China of Mongolia or evenEurope and you have the time, this train is a destination on its own.
By bus
The city is fairly well supplied with a bus company, however, given the quality of the roads, the local weather and the distances to be covered, this solution is preferred for journeys of less than 12 h and the auspicious seasons.

The Novosibirskois metro is very cheap (20 RUB the journey) and operates from 7 h - 24 h. It works with tokens that you can buy at any station, at the cash desk or at the machine.
There are two lines, one crossing the city from north to south, the other from east to west.

By bus
The ticket usually goes to 19 RUB, to be avoided during peak hours (17 h 3018 h 30) when the roads are congested. It comes in handy when the destination is far from metro stops.
In marchroutka
Kind of collective taxi, the minibus trip can cost up to 35 RUB. They cover larger areas than the usual means of transport. It will be preferred to get to Akademgorodok or on Lake Novosibirsk for example. Like the bus, it is subject to the vagaries of traffic.
By taxi
As in all cities of Russia, the taxi is very cheap compared to Western prices. It is especially useful at night for late evening returns. Count 300 RUB for a run of 10-15 min to be divided by the number of occupants. Remember to book it in advance.
By hitchhiking
The stop sign is common in Russia, it is customary to pay the Good Samaritan. So ask for the price before getting on board. For safety reasons but also for understanding with your interlocutor, ask them to drop you off at a metro stop or a known point in the neighborhood of your destination.

Driving is on the right, but half of the vehicles are imported from Japan and therefore have the steering wheel on the right.
Access for the disabled
Unfortunately, the city's infrastructure is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. Even if the metro has reserved places, the platforms are only accessible by escalator or stairs.

Many small shops sell sim cards (no obligation) on the commercial streets. The accounts can then be recharged at machines in the metro or in public places. Be careful, this solution is very economical for local calls, but it is expensive for federal or international calls.
Security
You should rather avoid walking in the outskirts (Pervomaiskiy has a bad reputation).
The city center is a safe place. However, blacks are very rare there and the ignorance of certain inhabitants leads to rather astonishing prejudices. If possible, be accompanied by a native in neighborhoods you do not yet know.
Also note that a law punishing "homosexual propaganda" was passed in 2012. Avoid openly homosexual behavior in public spaces.
