Tomsk (Russian: Томск) is a city in the Tomsk Oblast in the West Siberia. There are many students and Russian-Germans in the city, which sets it apart from other Siberian cities.

background

Main building of the university

Located on the Tom River, the city was founded in 1604 on the orders of Tsar Boris Godunov as a military outpost against the nomadic peoples. Gold was discovered in 1830, which spurred the fortunes of the city, but after the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which bypassed Tomsk and passed the area further south, economic development also drifted away from the city. Instead, Tomsk became a university town. Tomsk profited after World War II when the factories were relocated to the east, away from the conflict. It was closed to outsiders during the Cold War.

Today Tomsk has about 525,000 inhabitants, of which 15% are students who come from all over Siberia, Central Asia and even from the European part of Russia. As a result, Tomsk probably has a larger proportion of foreign language speakers than any other Siberian city.

A sample of a wooden house in the classicism style, extremely rare for Siberia, was built in the 1860s. Don't expect any extravagance, just strict wooden masonry and a mezzanine on top.

Wooden architecture

More monuments of wooden architecture in the style of Siberian Baroque, Art Nouveau and Classicism have been preserved in Tomsk than anywhere else in Russia. Much of this splendor has been lost for various reasons, but something has been preserved. In many quarters you can still see traditional Siberian wooden buildings, houses decorated with filigree carvings. In Tomsk, the only Siberian city, groups of several standing old wooden houses have been preserved, which are to be placed under UNESCO protection; several such groups of houses have been restored since 2004. A municipal program to preserve at least 701 old houses has been adopted. At the same time, there is very little space left for development within the borders of Tomsk and there is almost no free space in the city center, so that the wooden buildings of the old Tomsk are being destroyed by developers who are erecting new buildings in their place, which are not always the meet basic aesthetic requirements. There are also masterpieces of stone architecture in Tomsk, including the beginning of the XX. Century that give the city a really unique look. An order from the local administration came into effect to prohibit the construction of deliberately burned houses on the site. It is allowed to build parks and squares in such places.

  • 3  Russian-German house, Krasnoarmeyskaya Ulitsa, 71, Tomsk, 634041 (ул. Красноармейская, 71, s. Г. Tel.: 7 382 252-17-25. • 5  House with Dragons (House with Chimeras, Bystritsky Villa) (Дом с драконами), 68 Krasnoarmeyskaya Str. (Yurtochnaya Gora), ул. 68. House with dragons in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsHouse with Dragons (Q84176232) in the Wikidata database. The house was built in 1917 by the local architect Vikentiy Ořeško. It's an unpainted wooden house with ice skates and a tower. On the ledge are heads of fantastic animals commonly associated with dragons, and it is sometimes believed that their design came from a wooden church in Borgunne, Norway. There is no evidence that Orgeshko has ever been to Norway, but the house really does look like a Norwegian church.
  • 6  19 Belinsky Street, 19 Belinsky Street (Verkhnya Elan), Улица Белинского, 19. The building erected in 1917 in the modernist wooden style. Two-storey house with bay windows, towers and turrets. Painted in green, decorated in white.
  • 7  The house with firebirds, 67/1 Krasnoarmeyskaya Street., Красноармейская улица, 67/1. This wooden house was built in 1903 (architect Fyodorovsky) and despite the fairly revealing restoration recently carried out, it remains one of the best monuments of Tomsk wooden youth thanks to several wooden figures of firebirds on the roof. The shape of the house is unusual, the architect (or the architects of later conversions) clearly overloaded it with decorative elements, so that verandas, mezzanines, towers and even a spire (to which two firebirds are attached) have emerged. The house is painted yellow, the entire interior is white.
Art Nouveau wooden house on two floors with a bay window and a four-sided tower. Even more interesting is the north facade with a balcony (opposite the intersection). A wonderful carving has been added to the whole.
The two-story house was built in the early 20th century. It is made of unpainted trunks, and only the decor is painted white, which contrasts with the brown trunks. On the other hand, you can study Art Nouveau architecture through its decoration - there are cladding with specific shapes, bay windows and only vertical lines at the top of the building. There is a plaque on the south facade informing that the composer Edison Denisov was born in this house in 1929.
The house was owned by Vikentiy Ožeško and was built according to his design in 1911. It is a one-story house of rather intricate shape, with a bay window on the facade and two gables on the side (it can be seen from Herzstrasse (улицы Герцена)). The house is a log cabin, the lower part is not painted, the upper part of the residential complex is painted with gray and blue boards, and the boards are decorated with white paint. It seems like a solid Art Nouveau style.
  • 11  House of the merchant Gromov The house, built in 1908 in Art Nouveau style, is quite unusual in its shape. Check out the carvings throughout the lower floor, including those with deer antlers, and the decoration tower in the northwest corner of the house.
  • 12  House of the merchant Khamitov The house was built in 1905 in the style of eclecticism. In fact, it is a medium-sized palace because Khamitov was a wealthy Tatar trader. You are not allowed in, but there are very different design elements that are combined on the outside, some are reminiscent of Classicism, others of Art Nouveau. Please note that the ornament only uses plant motifs, not animals - the customer of the house was a religious Muslim.

The church was built in a rare Siberian baroque style that combines elements of Russian and Ukrainian baroque. Originally the church was made of wood. The church was often destroyed by fires, so it was decided to build it out of stone. In 1807 the construction of a new stone church was completed.
