Nukus is the capital of the autonomous region Karaqalpaqstan (Qaraqalpaqstan) in the north Uzbekistan.
background
The place is for travelers as a base after Khiva above Urganch and in the desert areas of the dried up Aral Sea of importance. The city was only founded in 1932, so no historical buildings can be seen.
One speaks in the region an Uzbek-influenced dialect of Kazakh, Karakalpak (Qaraqalpaq tili; ISO 639-2: kaa), which is also the official language of the autonomous region.

- The desert areas of the dried up Aral Sea at Moynaq are 200 km and two and a half hours away.
- In the vicinity you can find castle ruins, called Kalas.
- Mizdach Chan is a medieval burial town, which is located near Xo‘jayli, can be reached in about 40 minutes by car. Buses run from the northern bus station. Marshrutkas from Autovocal in the old City.
