Nukus is the capital of the autonomous region Karaqalpaqstan (Qaraqalpaqstan) in the north Uzbekistan.

The place is for travelers as a base after Khiva above Urganch and in the desert areas of the dried up Aral Sea of importance. The city was only founded in 1932, so no historical buildings can be seen.
One speaks in the region an Uzbek-influenced dialect of Kazakh, Karakalpak (Qaraqalpaq tili; ISO 639-2: kaa), which is also the official language of the autonomous region.
