Geographical notes

Located in the southwestern part of the Tehuantepec isthmus, it borders to the west with the Guerrero, to the northwest with the Puebla, to the north with the Veracruz, to the east with the Chiapas and to the south it overlooks the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Tehuantepec.

Background

This region (especially the Oaxaca valley) was inhabited in ancient times by the Mixtecs, who occupied the western part, and by the Zapotecs, who occupied the eastern part. The Aztecs called the area Huaxyácac (pronounced uascïàkak) which means "Place of the Huaje trees". The Spaniards were able to conquer the area only in 1521 and after bitter struggles.

In 2006, the state of Oaxaca was at the center of a repression campaign which resulted in deaths, injuries and arrests. The events in Oaxaca saw the establishment of the APPO, which gathers the various forces of local civil society, committed to the defense of social and civil rights.
