Okarito is a city on the West coast the South island of New Zealand. In 1642 the expedition got from Abel Tasman to see New Zealand for the first time, here in Okarito. The peaceful Okarito is located on a wild and romantic beach and the Okarito lagoon. This lagoon is the largest of its kind in New Zealand and is the breeding ground for many water birds. Okarito became known through Keri Hulme's bestseller The bone people (Under the day moon) that takes place in this wild and remote region.

background

The small settlement Okarito is located on the lagoon of the same name between the Tasman Sea and the rainforests at the foot of the New Zealand Alps. The name is derived from Okarito Kotuku, a great egret that lives here. Also the Okarito Brown Kiwi or Rowi, extremely endangered with just 300 specimens, is at home here.
