The Oostvaardersplassen are a 56 km² large wild nature reserve in the Flevopolder, located between Almere and Lelystad. Although the Netherlands does not contain any official wilderness areas, the Oostvaardersplassen are the closest.

History

Oostvaardersplassen.

When the Flevopolder was drained, a large clay plain was created. This area was initially intended for industry. However, the construction of this industry is not forthcoming and in the meantime the swampy swamp area grows into one of the most talked-about nature reserves in Europe.

Red deer, primeval cattle, horses, foxes and sea eagles live in the Oostvaardersplassen. It is expected that the wolf will also join in the foreseeable future.
