THE'South Ossetia in long form the Republic of South Ossetia, in OssetianXussar Iryston, Хуссар Ирыстон and Respublikæ Xussar Iryston, Республикӕ Хуссар Ирыстон, in RussianYuzhnaya Ossetiia, Южная Осетия and Respoublika Yuzhnaya Ossetiia, Республика Южная Осетия, in GeorgianSamkhreti Osseti, სამხრეთი ოსეთი, is a territory located in the Caucasus to the contested status (the Georgia places the republic whose status it does not recognize in its province of Shida Kartli, while Russia recognized its independence in 2008). South Ossetia unilaterally seceded from Georgia in 1992, the largest lake in South Ossetia is the Kelistba lake.

- Leningor / Akhalgori (Russian and Ossetian / Georgian) – A small town that was under Georgian control, until 2008.
- Java – Nominally the administrative center of the Georgian district of Java, but not under Georgian control.

Formalities
Visitors to South Ossetia do not need a visa. However they are required to hold a VisaRussian valid permit that allows them to return to Russia unless they are Russian citizens or citizens of countries which are exempt from Russian visas and must notify the authorities in advance of their visit.
