Sightseeing

Church during the re-roofing with clapboards

The church, first mentioned in a document in 1370, a late Gothic pilgrimage church with a classicistic high altar and side altars from the Rococo, is under the patronage of Our Lady of Sorrows. The church was destroyed and rebuilt twice by the Turks, in 1480 and 1532, and stonemasons still visible today are evidence of masters from the 16th century. The most important days of pilgrimage are the 4th, 5th, 6th Sunday after Easter, August 15th (Great Women's Day) and September 8th (Little Women's Day) and from April to September every 13th of the month on which so-called Fatima pilgrimages take place.

In the footsteps of Leo Simon Reinisch

Leo Simon Reinisch around 1910

Osterwitz is the birthplace of the well-known orientalist and Africanist Leo Simon Reinisch (1832 - 1919), his birthplace or home courtyard, the Schoberhof, has been preserved to this day, a plaque on the house where he was born shows his work (EXET MONUMENTUM AERE PERENNIUS [quote from Horace: He created a monument more permanent than ore]).

On behalf of Archduke Maximilian, later Emperor of Mexico, Leo Simon Reinisch researched Egyptian writings and monuments and found the very valuable inscription of Tana on a trip to Egypt in 1865/66. In 1866 he followed Emperor Maximilian to Mexico and studied the Indian languages there (Aztec, Otomi, Mazahua). After his return to Austria in 1868, he taught at the University of Vienna and researched - on numerous study trips - Northeast African languages. Leo Simon Reinisch was professor of Egyptian language and antiquity, rector of the University of Vienna and member of the Academy of Sciences, he is still referred to as the father of African studies today. After his retirement he lived on the Reinischhof in Sommereben near Stainz (near Deutschlandsberg) until his death and was buried in the cemetery of Maria Lankowitz (near Voitsberg), on the church wall there is his grave plaque as a memorial.

Pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago

One stage of the route to the grave of St. James, who was one of the three preferred disciples of Jesus, has led through western Styria and Osterwitz since 2009.
