Ouchgouli is a mountain community of four or five villages of Svaneti.

To go

The means of transport to Ouchgouli are very limited. There is a route from Kutaisi which is served by private vehicles. Otherwise a trip to Mestia is the best way to see Ouchgouli. A private vehicle can take you there for a day trip or for a few days. The cost will be ~ 50-70 USD for a day trip. The cost is higher if you stay a little longer. The trip to Mestia takes about 4-h for less than 70 km due to the poor quality of the road. It is also possible to walk there from Mestia in 3-4 days. It is a great way to see Svaneti for the physically fit.

Once you arrive in the villages, you can easily reach the others on foot.

  • The Museum of Ethnography Logo indicating tariffs 5-6 GEL. – A visit to the 5 is well worth GEL that the local children will ask at the entrance. Housed in a preserved Svan house, the museum contains artefacts illustrating the long history of the Svaneti regions. Local children will provide a memorized description of the artifacts in fair English.
  • Georgian War Chest  – Placed in the "most inaccessible part of Georgia" the countless national treasures were placed in the monastery of Ouchgouli during times of conflict.
