Ouessant is a french Commune in the department Finistère in the Brittany. It is on the Ile d'Ouessantwhich belongs entirely to the church.

Politically, the municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Brest and forms the canton of Ouessant alone.

The whole island is a rocky heathland with salt marshes. There are trees in house gardens and in the main town of Lampaul.

There is a small airfield, which can only be approached by small planes. The air Line FINIST'AIR flies to the island with a 9-seater Cessna.

By boat

There are two shipping lines to Ouessant. The daily ferry connection from Brest leads over Le Conquet and the neighboring island of Molène (1-3 connections daily, duration approx. 2½ hours Timetable). There is a direct ferry line from Camaret-sur-Mer to Ouessant (1 hour).

During the main season there is a speedboat connection between Le Conquet and Ouessant (30 min).

The port of Ouessant is located in the Baie du Stiff.

Tourist Attractions

The entire island has belonged to the since 1969 Parc Naturel Règional d'Armorique

  • Ecomusée Niou-Huella. The Ecomusée Niou-Huella, set up in two houses over a hundred years old, tells the story of the island.
  • Phare de Créac'h. The 55 meter high lighthouse in the west of the island. It is considered to be the strongest lighthouse in Europe with a range of 80 kilometers. In his former machine house is a small one
