Palma de Mallorca or, officially since 2016, Palma is a city of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands.
Understand
Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands, is the largest city in Mallorca; the population of the municipality of Palma is approximately 400,000 inhabitants. Half of the island's population lives in the city of Palma.
The town occupies the northwestern end of the southwestern bay of the island of Mallorca. The jurisdiction of the city extends over the sub-archipelago of Cabrera comprising the islands of Cabrera, Conejera, Estells, Imperial, Rodon, Foradada, Plana and Pobra.
The name of Palma dates back to the Roman colonies on the site of the present city. The locality was inhabited since the Bronze Age. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, it was conquered by the Arabs, who called it Madina Mayurqa. In 1229, the city was conquered by King James Ier, ruler of Valence and Aragon, to become an important commercial city. Palma experienced a dark age in the XVIe century, when a significant decline was caused by the plague and attacks by Turkish and Berber pirates. It will be necessary to wait for the XVIIIe century, for Philip V to change the government and make Palma the capital of the Balearic Islands. Later, Charles III will conclude a free trade pact with the West Indies, which will have a huge impact on Palma's finances.
The city became a tourist destination in the 1950s, the number of tourists increased continuously until the 2000s. Palma is a very dynamic commercial and cultural center. The tourist season is going to end April up to October.
