Flora and fauna
Located in northern Botswana, Chobe National Park attracts thousands of visitors each year due to its fame as one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the country. This wildlife sanctuary also has the largest elephant population in Africa.
Elephants are most visible during the dry season, when they congregate around waterholes, especially the Chobe River.
We can see 4 of the Big five in Chobe Park: the savannah elephant (Loxodonta africana), Lion (Panthera leo), the leopard(Panthera pardus) and buffalo (Syncerus caffer) - but not (or very rarely) rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis ). Chobe Park has a multitude of antelopes including the rare Black Hippotrague (Hippotragus niger).
Weather
The park has a distinct wet and dry season, it is humid from December through May. Like much of Africa, animals can migrate further away from permanent water sources during the rainy season, and are therefore easier to see during the dry season.
To go
There are a multitude of tours organized from Kasane and from both sides of the Victoria Falls, Victoria falls and Livingstone.
Agencies operating from Victoria Falls transfer you to the common river border between Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. A boat trip takes you to Botswana, just a five minute drive from Kasana and the safari lodges.
Circulate
There is an entrance fee to the park which is often included with the price of the trip, if you are on a guided tour.
Full-day tours are often done in two parts: a half-day by boat and a half-day on land. The boat trip will allow you to see crocodiles and elephants up close. Boat operators tend to keep their distance from hippos a little more. You can expect to see a greater diversity of wildlife on the land.
The roads are not very good and a properly equipped 4WD vehicle is essential if you want to drive yourself. There is a one-way system for getting around the park near Kasane. Read the signs at the entrance. Many of the safari vehicles offer their services, they are often attached to a safari lodges.
