Understand

Kouchibouguac National Park is located on the coast of Southeastern New Brunswick along the Northumberland Strait near the town of Richibuctu at about 110 km in the north of Moncton. It protects a set of barrier islands, dunes, forests, barachois and salt marshes. Most of the park is a land area covering an area of 198,7 km2, but it also includes a marine area of 40,60 km2. The park has also been designated as a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and the barrier beach is recognized as an important area for bird conservation. The park is bordered to the northwest by the Black River protected natural area.

There are 54 species mammals in the park as well as 223 species avians and eight species of reptiles.

The park is administered by the federal government agency Parks Canada and is visited annually by approximately 160,000 visitors. The vast majority of visitors are Canadians. In fact, over 70% of visitors are repeat visitors.

By car

The park is accessible by three provincial roads. Route 11 connects it to Miramichi north and Moncton to the south while Highway 17 crosses the northern sector of the park. For its part, Route 134 serves the communities in parallel to Route 11, including Saint-Louis-de-Kent.
