the zion national park is a united states national park located in the South-East ofUtah. It is one of the most spectacular parks and it is famous for its magnificent orange sandstone cliffs long 730 meters in the middle of which flows the Virgin River.

Understand

Zion National Park includes several sectors:

  • the main canyon from the south entrance, from the village of Springdale, which is the main entrance and the most touristy
  • the Kolob canyon, from highway 15

It is possible to cross the South Park from Springdale in the east through the beautiful Mount Carmel Tunnel by following Route 9 and thus admire the Mesa checkerboard.

To go

There are 2 entrances to access the main canyon located to the east of the park. Las Vegas Where Salt lake city take Interstate # 15 and exit at Exit 16 then take Route 9 for 20 miles to the town of Springdale and the south entrance to the park. Bryce canyon or Page, take route 89, exit at Mount Carmel Junction and take route 9 to the east entrance of the park. This entrance is more spectacular and goes through a tunnel which is often in alternating traffic (large vehicles must pay an additional 15 $ to go through the tunnel) Entrance to the park is chargeable: 25 $ per vehicle or a valid US National Parks Pass.

The northwestern part of the park is in a cul de sac and provides access to the Kolob canyon. Entrance is via exit 40 from Interstate 15.

From the village of Virgin, it is possible to travel the beautiful Kolob Terrace Road. The road is intersected by private ranches and portions of the National Park. The Kolob Reservoir is surprising, bordered by thorny trees, while the desert was only a few kilometers away.

Circulate

Since 2000, car traffic has been limited in the main canyon. Free and regular shuttles serve the main hikes departure points. The town of Springdale also has a shuttle system to the park's visit center.

To see

Official park map

The canyon and its cliffs can be visited simply by taking advantage of the various shuttle stops. To take full advantage of the park, a large number of hikes are possible. Some of them contain steep sections and are not recommended for people prone to vertigo. In addition, in the event of a thunderstorm, deadly floods (flash flood) can occur, so it is crucial to check with the rangers about the potential dangers before leaving. In summer, the park is particularly hot, so you have to plan for a good quantity of water and prefer the cooler hours of the day. All the shuttle stops have drinking water and toilets.

Do

Many hikes are offered by the park, the most famous being undoubtedly Angel's Landing. It is also possible to hike over several days, by requesting a "backcountry pass" in advance at the Visitor Center.

Main hikes:

  • Riverside Walk: At the end of the canyon (Temple of Sinawava stop), a wheelchair accessible walk that leads to the beginning of the Narrows
  • Narrows: An extension of the Riverside Walk, you walk along the riverbed along a narrowing canyon. The hike is a 9 mile round trip with many passages in the water sometimes requiring swimming. It is therefore necessary to provide special equipment as the water temperature can be cold and it is imperative to check with the rangers about the possibilities of flooding.
  • Angels Landing offers a spectacular view of the canyon around the Big Bend. The departure is at the Grotto stop and goes up 500 m to Scout Lookout. From there the path becomes more difficult and includes passages with chains. The return being on the same path as the outward journey, it is often necessary to stop to let people pass in the other direction. As the hike is very popular, it is strongly recommended to do it fairly early in the morning or in the evening.

To buy

The lodge and visitor center contain souvenir and fast food shops.
