The Krka National Park (Nacionalni Park Krka) is a national park in the region of Sibenik in Croatia.

Geographical notes

The park has an area of ​​109 km² extending along the Krka River, in the Count of Sibenik-Knin. The Krka River rises at the foot of the Dinara Mountain near Knin and along its course it forms 7 waterfalls. Krka is the 22nd longest river in Croatia.

Flora and fauna

The National Park has a rich fauna and a great biodiversity: 18 species of fish, 222 species of birds, 18 different species of bat, reptiles and amphibians for a total of about 860 species.

Krka National Park is the seventh national park in the Croatia and was established in 1985.

By car

TO Trieste pass the former border of Pesek / Kozina, and continue to the Croatian border where you can take thehighway until Sibenik. The alternative is to go out to River (Rijeka), continue on the coastal road. The coast road is full of curves and single lane, but in return offers a nice view. The motorway is newly built, in excellent condition, with two lanes, except in the Sv. Rok tunnel (5 km long). In case of strong winds the section from Sv. Rok to Maslinac may remain closed to traffic.

On boat

Starting from Sibenik, it is also possible to reach Skradin by sailing boat, as the Krka river is navigable.

On the train

To reach Sibenik by train, starting from Italy, it is not recommended, as the fastest train connection requires two train changes 2 15 hours of travel.

By bus

FromSilos bus station of Trieste an international bus leaves daily (for Ragusa) which also stops Sibenik. In the summer months of greater tourist influx it is advisable to book a seat at the Trieste station (tel. 39 040 425020) and go and buy the ticket on the morning of departure (it is not possible to buy it before). It often happens that the bus is full and several tourists remain on the ground. In addition to this line there are several runs for River from where it is possible to take another bus to Sibenik.

Permits / Rates

  • From November to February: adults 30 kn, children from 7 to 14 years 20 kn.
  • From March to May, and October: adults 80 kn, children 60 kn.
  • From June to September: adults 95 kn, children 70 kn.

In the park there is a ban on: bathing outside the designated places, fishing without permission, collecting or damaging plants and trees, hunting or disturbing animals, lighting a fire, camping, leaving waste, etc.

What see

The Visovac convent
Skradinski Buk waterfall
  • Visovac lake. It is located between the Roŝki slap and Scardona waterfalls. In the middle of the lake there is an islet, on which there is a convent of Franciscan friars, a church and a museum.

Waterfalls

  • Bilušić 16 km from the source is the first waterfall of the Krka river, 22 m high and 106 m wide.
  • Brljan or Ćorić 3 km from the first waterfall, 15.5 m high.
  • Manjolovac the highest waterfalls of the Krka river and also one of the most spectacular, 500 m from the Brljan waterfall.
  • Rošnjak 1 km from the Manjolovac waterfall is the lowest waterfall (only 8.4 m).
  • Miljacka not reachable as it is incorporated into the water plant complex.
  • Roški slap the main waterfall is 22.5 m high and is located at the entrance to the Visovac lake. In the middle of the lake there is an islet that houses a small church, a convent of Franciscan friars and a museum.
  • Skradinski buk the last waterfall is known for its 17 steps which give it particular charm. Here you can also visit the ancient mills and the ethnographic collection.

Fortresses

On the territory of the Krka National Park there are numerous fortresses, mostly in ruins, built to defend themselves from the Turks.

  • Nečven, built in the 15th century and fallen to the Turks in 1522. Recaptured in 1688, the complex was abandoned a century later;
  • Čučevo, built in the Middle Ages, also fell into the hands of the Turks, who used it as a prison. It was destroyed in 1648;
  • Bogočin, located on the left of the Krka river upstream of the Roŝki slap waterfall, is close to a settlement which is presumed to date back to the Iron Age;
  • Ključica is located on the Cicola River and was built in 1330. The Turks occupied Ključ in 1546, from where they were driven out in 1648. Since then the fortress has been abandoned;
  • Burnum was a Roman camp. Here the passage across the Krka River was controlled from where the Roman military units passed. Burnum was destroyed in 639 during the Avar-Slavic invasions.
