Necromancy
Nekromanteion: Mycenaean wall and early Christian. church
  • 1  Parga Castle. Parga Castle is located on a hill above the city and served to protect the city from the mainland and the sea. Its current form is the result of extensive reconstruction at the end of the 16th century. To avoid attacks by the Albanians, the Pargians moved their village, far from the sea, to its present location in 1360. During this time, with the help of the Normans who owned the island of Corfu, the Parga fortress was built. In 1401 a treaty was signed with the Venetians that gave them control of the Ionian Islands. The Venetians respected the lifestyle of the Pargians, who in turn provided valuable assistance to the Venetian fleet. In 1452, Parga and the castle were occupied by the Ottomans for two years. During this time part of the castle was demolished. Then the Venetians came back. In 1537 the pirate Hayreddin Barbarossa burned the fortress and the houses in it. Before the castle was rebuilt by the Venetians in 1572, it was destroyed again by the Turks. The Venetians built a third time a perfect fortress that remained impregnable for centuries. They built eight towers in front of the castle and two cisterns to supply the castle with water in times of war. Inside the narrow citadel there were 400 houses. In this castle the besieged inhabitants of Parga and Souli fought several battles and kept their freedom for centuries. The tanks of the castle and the houses were supplied with water from the “Kremasma” cistern. The castle used the two bays: Valtos and Pogonia. In 1797 the area, along with the Ionian Islands and Parga, fell into the hands of the French, and in 1800 the status of a free city with extensive authority under the protection of the Sublime Porte was proclaimed. With the failure of the French, the citizens of Parga rebelled against French rule in 1815 and sought protection from the British. In 1817, under a treaty between Great Britain and the Ottoman Empire, the British sold Parga to the Ali-Pasha for £ 150,000. On Good Friday of 1819 this led to the fact that 4,000 residents moved to the British protectorate of Corfu. When Parga was sold to the Ottomans, Ali Pasha improved the fort and built the harem and Turkish bath.
  • 2  Panagia Island Castle. A small French castle ruin on the island in the Bay of Parga.
  • 3  Arthoussa castle ruins (Ali Pasha Castle). A castle built by Ali Pasha of Ioannina in 1814 above the village of Anthoussa 3 km from Parga. After the end of the Republic of Venice, Parga was the only place in Epirus that did not fall into the hands of Ali Pasha. but was protected by French troops. In February 1814, after the fall of Napoleon, Ali Pasha felt that he was breaking the treaties between the Turks and the French and raiding the villages of Ayia and Antoussa, which were in a gray area between his Pashalik and French rule. However, he made no move against Parga. Instead, he decided to build a fortress on a peak above Anthoussa, with the obvious goal of later conquering Parga from there. The fort turned out to be useless. In the same year, 1814, the British took over the Ionian Islands and Parga from the French. In 1819 the British sold Parga to Ali for £ 150,000 in one of the most dramatic episodes in modern Greek history.
