O Intervals State Park is a park in the state of São Paulo.

Understand

Declared by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, the Intervals is physically connected to the Carlos Botelho, to the Alto Ribeira - PETAR and the Xitué ecological station, covering a total of 200,000 hectares.

The Park has an area of ​​a little more than 41 thousand hectares, with one of the most preserved continuous reserves of Atlantic Forest remnants in the country.

Due to the diversity of species, Intervales frequently receives tourists from all over the world interested in the sighting of endemic birds of the Atlantic Forest, such as the spider, a bamboo broody, a red-backed hatchet, a jacutinga, O matron, a come out seven-colors, O tanager, O green-billed toucan it's the uru.

History

The Fazenda Intervales, when it was bought by Banco BANESPA, made a living from the extraction of palm hearts.

The farm was no longer exploited by the bank and started to be recovered and conserved by the Forest Foundation, becoming a State Park in 1994.

Flora and fauna

The landscape is covered by the original Atlantic Forest. Araucaria trees, parrots, ferns, palm trees and bromeliads are very easy to see.

The animals that with luck can be seen are the Jaguar, a Puma, O yellow-breasted alligator and monocoal monkey.

Climate

The climate is humid and cold most of the year, as it is located in a region of 860 m in altitude.

waterfalls

  • . During the walk you can see palm trees and animals such as howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys, as well as birds, bromeliads and orchids. Part of the path is covered by a stream from where the primary forest can be seen.
  • . In its 4km route it is common to see ferns, bromeliads and açu ferns, which flank the route, which can be extended, following the course of the river, which is quite shallow and rocky.
  • . A very beautiful waterfall. The first eleven kilometers of this trail are made by car, along a road that gives access to a Park Surveillance Base, called São Pedro. The rest (six kilometers) of the trail is on foot. Along the way, you can see animal footprints and beautiful vegetation (primary forest).

  • . During the journey, rocky outcrops are common. At the entrance to the cave, the limestone rocks are covered in large part by lichens, maidenhair ferns and begonias. Inside there are various formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, cauliflowers and star floors.
  • . This cave has several calcareous formations. To access its interior, it is necessary to pass through a stream that cuts the mouth of the cave. Inside there is a water spout and a large hall.
  • . The walk along this trail leads to a small cave. Nearby, there is a 20 meter tall fig tree whose roots resemble tree trunks.
  • . It leads to a cave with various limestone formations, labyrinths and halls; a stream that runs through the cave. Along the way, you can observe occurrences of jacu-guaçus, woodpeckers and serelepes, as well as several species of plants.

The region is home to many species of birds endemic to the Atlantic Forest, a real spectacle for birdwatching enthusiasts, found in this area: Araponga, bamboo broo, red-backed choquinha, jacutinga, matracão, saira -seven-colors, tanager, green-billed toucan and uru. Birds that occur in the lowlands can be observed, such as the blood tie and, in the higher areas, species such as the corocochó and the striped owl.

  • . On this trail, there is a difference between primary and secondary forest. In the stretch of the Água Comprida River, there are açu ferns, pleitos, ferns and large trees. It is possible to find animals or traces of tapir, deer, wild dog and ocelot. This trail is a second option for walking to Cachoeira do Mirante.
  • . It leads to a 10m high wooden tower. It holds 20 people, offering an overview of the surrounding vegetation and, eventually, animal observation. On this trail, bromeliads and orchids are common, as well as birds and animal traces.

The place does not have a camping area, so your best option is to stay inside the park.

Safety

  • It is essential to have a guide, as the galleries in the caves can turn into veritable labyrinths.
  • Have extra batteries for flashlights and plastic bags to waterproof equipment, as well as to bring your trash back.
  • Take a canteen, light clothes that warm up, preferably quick drying, non-slip sneakers, socks, bed linen, towel.
  • The roads leading to the park have gravel along the 25Km, so be careful.
