Patmos - Patmos

Patmos (Greek Πάτμος) is the northernmost island of the Dodecanese. The island is relatively small and sparsely populated with 40 km². However, it is an important place of pilgrimage for Orthodoxy and other Christian churches, because this is where the Evangelist John the Apocalypse or the Secret revelation have written. Since 1999 the religious sites of the island of Patmos belong to the UNESCO world cultural heritage.

There is no airport on Patmos, the island can only be reached by boat and there are ferry connections Piraeus (Duration depending on the type of ship 10 - 24 hours) as well as to almost all islands of the Dodecanese. Day trips are also often offered from the neighboring islands.

Tourist Attractions

  • Moni Agios Ioannis o Theologos (or Johannes Monastery). Located above the old town, founded in 1088. The fortress walls were built in the 16th and 17th centuries. Built in the 18th century to protect against pirates.
  • Moni tis apocalypsis. The apocalypse monastery with the grotto where John received his revelation.
