The balafon of the Sénoufo communities of Mali, from Burkina Faso and of Ivory Coast is a pentatonic xylophone, known locally as ncegele. The ncegele is made up of eleven to twenty-one blades of unequal length, cut from wood and arranged on a trapezoidal support, also made of wood or bamboo. The instrument's resonators are calabashes, also of unequal size, arranged under the support, in proportion to the boards. They are perforated and lined with membranes of spider oothecae to vibrate the sound. The tuning of the ncegele is set to dividing the octave into five equal intervals. The sounds are obtained by striking the blades with wooden sticks bearing at the ends by a rubber head. Performed solo or in an instrumental ensemble, the musical discourse is based on an offer of multiple rhythmic melodies. The ncegele hosts festivals, accompanies prayers in parishes and in sacred woods, stimulates hard work, punctuates funeral music and supports the teaching of value systems, traditions, beliefs, customary law, ethical rules governing society and the individual in daily acts. The player first learns on children's balafons and then improves on "normal" balafons under the direction of a master.Balafon children burkina faso.jpg
