4 Ilulissat Ice Fjord (Greenland) Natural(vii), (viii)Located on the west coast of Greenland, at 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, the Ilulissat Ice Fjord (40 240 Ha) is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which ice from the Greenlandic ice sheet reaches the sea. Sermeq Kujalleq is one of the fastest glaciers (19 m per day) and the most active in the world. Her annual calving of more than 35 km3, or 10% of all the calving ice (icebergs) in Greenland, exceeds that of all other glaciers in the world outside of Antarctica. Studied for more than 250 years, the site has enriched our understanding of climate change and the glaciology of the ice sheet. The immense sheet of ice combined with the awe-inspiring crash of a rapid ice flow calving in an iceberg-covered fjord creates a spectacular and awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.Greenland Ilulissat-09.jpg
5 Stevns Klint (Stevns Cliffs) Natural(viii)This geological site, which includes a coastline along 15 km with fossiliferous cliffs, is an exceptional testimony to the impact of the fall of the Chicxulub meteorite, which occurred at the end of the Cretaceous period, about 65 million years ago. Scientists generally consider this impact to be responsible for the most recent of the great mass extinctions in history, which caused dinosaurs to disappear and more than 50% of life on Earth. The sedimentary record of the ash cloud formed by the meteorite impact can be observed at this site, the site of the impact being at the bottom of the water off the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. We can also observe an exceptional fossil record made up of a succession of biological assemblages.Stevns klint.jpg
The wadden sea Mixed(viii) (ix) (x)The Wadden Sea is considered the world's largest uninterrupted system of mudflats and tidal sandbanks. The site includes the Dutch Wadden Sea Conservation Area, the German Wadden Sea National Parks of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein and most of the Danish Wadden Sea Conservation Area. This temperate coastal wetland ecosystem is the result of particularly complex interactions between physical and biological factors. There is a multitude of transitional habitats here: tidal channels, sandbanks, seagrass meadows, mussel beds, sandbars, mudflats, salt marshes, estuaries, beaches and dunes. The area is home to many species of plants and animals, including marine mammals such as harbor seals, gray seals and harbor porpoises. The site is one of the last large-scale natural intertidal ecosystems where natural processes continue in an almost undisturbed manner.Rømø, Mandø, Fanø.jpg
