1 Lakes of Ounianga | Natural | (vii) | The site includes 18 interconnected lakes, located in the Sahara Desert, in the Ennedi region. It is a large complex of lakes (62,808 hectares) in a hyper-arid environment and an exceptional natural landscape which owes its beauty to the spectacular variety of shapes and colors. The lakes - salty, hypersaline or freshwater - are fed by groundwater and are divided into two groups, separated by about 40 kilometers. Ounianga Kebir comprises four lakes, the largest of which - Lake Yoan - covers 358 hectares with a depth of 27 meters. Its hypersaline waters contain only algae and a few micro-organisms. The second group, Ounianga Serir, includes fourteen lakes separated by sand dunes. Floating reeds, which cover almost half of these lakes, dampen evaporation. With 436 hectares, Lake Teli is the largest of this group but its depth does not exceed 10 meters. Thanks to the good quality of their fresh water, some of these lakes are home to aquatic fauna, especially fish. | ![]()
2 Ennedi massif: natural and cultural landscape | Mixed | (iii) (vii) (ix) | Located in the northeast of the country, the Ennedi massif is made of sandstone. Over time, the erosion of water and wind has sculpted this plateau, cutting canyons and valleys offering spectacular landscapes made up of cliffs, natural arches and rocky peaks. In the largest canyons, permanent water plays a major role in the ecosystem of the massif, and allows the sustainability of fauna, flora and human beings. On the rocky surfaces of caves, canyons and shelters, thousands of images have been painted and engraved, constituting one of the largest collections of rock art in the Sahara. | ![]()
