Pemuteran is a fishing village on the north coast of West Bali.

To know

This fishing village has become increasingly popular in recent years. The rich offer of the beach resorts and its proximity to Lovina and the West Bali National Park, as well as the beauty of nature have helped to increase tourist interest and infrastructure. There are numerous dive centers, bike rentals, art shops and "homestays", mostly concentrated along the main road and the beaches. As soon as you leave the main road, you can experience the village lifestyle, with small farms, temples and schools.

Pemuteran also hosts the largest artificial coral reef in the world, called "Biorock". [1]. Here you can breathe the air of reconstruction and conservation of marine fauna and flora and the work done to date is enormous and in continuous development.

How to orient yourself

The traffic on the main road competes with that of Ubud. There are no sidewalks and motorbikes often drive on the opposite side of the road.

How to get

Visitors typically arrive by road on the north coast from Lovina or Singaraja or from the west from Gilimanuk. Regular bemos go back and forth on this road, they are very slow and crowded. You can get one almost anywhere.

By car

It can also be reached by hiring a car with driver from Lovina, just negotiate the price in advance and make sure that petrol is included. The transfer to Pemuteran from the southern tourist centers takes about four hours depending on the traffic on the coast road while from Amed it can take from 3 to 5 hours depending on the traffic for a cost of about Rp 600,000-700,000, depending on the bargaining skills.

How to get around

On foot

The country is not big and you can walk easily. You can stroll along the beaches and also through the internal streets, entering the village life up to climb the nearby mountains and visit the temples. Always keep in mind that the heat and humidity are strong, so always bring a hat and enough water.

By motorbike

You can rent scooters both in specialized shops and in the resorts or homestays where you are staying. Some places may offer cheaper rentals with the proviso that there is no insurance. This is because they are not licensed to rent mobile vehicles. Make the obvious assessments even if it is strongly advised not to risk traveling without insurance. The daily cost for a scooter is around Rp 70,000 excluding petrol.

What see

Early in the morning you can see dolphins as in Lovina; these boat trips can be organized in any hotel. Sighting is not guaranteed, but there is always a good chance of spotting a group.

The beaches, made up of light and fine gray sand, they are particularly beautiful in this area and are easy to reach from the village. The coral reef located east of the town's beach emerges at low tide along with sea urchins and crabs. On the west side, on the other hand, you can swim in Biorock, a local coral recovery and regrowth project that began in 2000. As you can see when swimming around Menjangan Island, the corals are dying fast. Another huge problem is the amount of plastic that arrives at high tide and settles on the beach. Many complain about this and it is highly recommended that you take an active approach to the problem, collecting as much plastic as you can by walking on the water's edge. There are various garbage buckets where you can deposit it.

L'Menjangan island and the West Bali National Park you can easily reach them from here. Boats to Menjangan Island depart from Labuhan Lalang, which is a 15-minute motorbike ride from Pemuteran. Mandatory permits can be purchased from the national park office located at the rear of the Labuhan Lalang car park from where a guide can also be booked. It is customary for guided groups to use this parking lot as a meeting point and then get on the same boat together. Most hotels can help organize activities related to this park.

Proyek Penyu, the turtle project, is a project to raise and release these animals in the wild, organized and managed by one of the scuba operators in the area, the Reef Seen, together with the locals. It is worth a visit.
