The Pendjari National Park (Parc National Pendjari) is located in the north of Benin on the border to Burkina Faso.

history

The park was established in 1961 and is on the UNESCO list of biosphere reserves. It is one of the last lion refuges in West Africa. About 460 species of birds are native here. The tourist park administration was turned from a commercial provider for ten years in 2017 African parks accepted.

Elephants, lions, buffalo, warthogs, hippos, monkeys, crocodiles, various antelope species, cheetahs.

climate

December to May is the dry season. A hot, dry wind is blowing, the Harmattan. Up to and including 2008, the park was closed during the rainy season from June to November. However, since the rainfall in recent years has been relatively low, the park administration decided to open the national park to visitors all year round for the first time in 2009

getting there

Either with your own off-road vehicle Natitingou, Tanguiéta. Or you can hire a driver with an off-road vehicle in Natitingou or Tanguiéta (price for one day: driver and car 75 euros 45 euros diesel = 120 euros, as of Dec. 2013).

Fees / permits

Admission per adult: 10,000 FCFA (approx. 15 EUR)

Admission per child: 3,000 FCFA (approx. 4.60 EUR)

Vehicle: 3,000 FCFA (approx. 4.60 EUR)

The tickets are generally only valid for one day. On the other hand, guests of the Camp Numi, Relais de Tanougou and Hotel Porga hostels can visit the park for several days in a row with the same ticket!

Lower admission prices apply to Beninese nationals, students and residents of neighboring communities.

Hotels and hostels

The one belonging to the Beninese state Hotel de la Pendjari is the cheap alternative with a bungalow for 15,000 CFA. The air-conditioned double room costs 25,000 CFA. The hotel has a pool, which in February 2014 could not be used (no water - broken).

The one run by a French couple Pendjari Lodge is located on a hill with a beautiful view. The very comfortably furnished tents have their own bathroom and a spacious double bed. Here the night costs 30,000 CFA per tent.

Camping is permitted in the park in designated areas. Because of the animals, a campfire should always be burning at night.
