background

Pennan with a phone booth

Pennan lies elongated between the coast and a cliff edge. The place lives and lived from fishing. In 2007 part of the town was buried in a landslide. In 2009 another crack was discovered in the rock face above the village.

In 1983 the location served as a set for the film Local Hero, the film spawned one of the most famous red telephone boxes in Scotland. The phone booth shown in the film was a dummy, due to the many visitors who wanted to see the phone booth, a functional cell was installed in 1989.
