Understand

The Antarctic Peninsula is almost like a mirror of southern South America. In fact, it is a geological extension of the Cordillera de los Andes (the Antartandes); and a submarine ridge that passes through the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands connects the two mountain ranges. This territory has been claimed by Argentina, chili and the United Kingdomapart from that United States Y Russia they reserved the right to make a future claim should the Antarctic Treaty cease to be in force. Under the provisions of the treaty, international access to the territory is allowed.

Many animal species live in this region, and in the short Antarctic summer it is their breeding area; here it is possible to find large colonies of penguins.

Watch

Many tourism companies offer itineraries with trips from 7 days to longer ones of 20 days. Longer itineraries offer more opportunities to go to the mainland, and it is possible to travel further south than with shorter itineraries; They are also more flexible and can adjust landings in case weather conditions are a problem.

Tours generally start in Ushuaia Y Punta Arenas (at the tip of South America) and then they sail for about two days through the Drake Passage towards the Antarctic Peninsula.
