Peterborough is an industrial city in the english historical county Cambridgeshire in the region East of England. Today, the city forms an independent administrative unit (Unitary Authority) with its surrounding area. It is known for its cathedral.

The city that grew strongly in the 1970s and 1980s River Nene has an important railway junction and forms the gateway to the Fens (Gateway to the Fens). The growth brought with it a strong immigration and the extensive redesign of the city center, which only left the small historical center around the cathedral untouched.

getting there

By plane

Fastest from London Stansted and then continue by train over Cambridge and the cathedral city, which is well worth seeing Ely or by rental car via Cambridge and Huntingdon. Stansted is mainly served by low-cost airlines from all over Europe.

By train

With the fastest trains from London (King’s Cross) is 45 minutes from Peterborough on the East Coast Main Line. Of Norwich it takes around an hour with the East Midland Trains.

By bus

In the street

The fastest way from London via the M11 at Stansted Airport and past Cambridge and on via the A14 as well as from Huntingdon onto the A1 (M), which you exit at the Fletton Parkway Interchange. You can also drive directly from London on the A1, but only a few sections of it is developed as a dual carriageway.

By boat

There is a good ferry connection from Hook of Holland to Harwich. It also has the advantage of not touching Greater London. The journey continues via Bury St. Edmunds and alternatively Cambridge or Ely.

The area around the cathedral is easily accessible on foot. There are several large parking lots to the south and south-east of the small old town. There is also parking in the west near the train station, e.g. at the large shopping center (Queensgate Center).

  • The main attraction is the Gothic church dedicated to Saints Peter, Paul and Andrew cathedralwhich was an abbey church until 1540. The facade with its three pointed arches is a magnificent sight.
  • Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery, in the Priestgate.
  • Flag Fen - Britain’s Bronze Age Center, around 4 km to the east. With an archaeological park of a Bronze Age settlement.
  • Longthorpe Tower, Thorpe Road. A tower from the 14th century.
