Philadelphia is a city in the state Pennsylvania in the United States of America.

Next Boston and New York City Philadelphia is one of the most interesting cities in the eastern United States. There is something for almost every taste here, and history and museum fans in particular will get their money's worth.

background

Philadelphia, often referred to as the "birthplace of the United States," is the birthplace of modern American democracy. Founded by William Penn in the late 17th century, the city name translates as "City of Brotherly Love". Since its inception, freedom and independence have played a crucial role in the history of the city of Philadelphia. Originally founded by the Quakers, the colony promoted religious freedom early on, which at that time was in stark contrast to England.

Districts

Downtown Philadelphia is between the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers. It is bounded to the north by Vine Street and to the south by South Street. Almost all places of tourist interest are within this rectangle. The outlying districts are mainly named after their direction.

history

Philadelphia plays the crucial role in the US War of Independence. The first continental congress met here. The United States' Declaration of Independence and Constitution were drawn up here, and Philadelphia was the country's capital from 1790 to 1800.

The "Independence Hall" and the "Liberty Bell" are the main attractions of the city, which are directly related to this role in Philadelphia. The Independence Hall and Liberty Bell are located in the so-called "National Historical Park" of Philadelphia, on the western edge of the old town, between Chestnut Street, Market Street, 5th and 6th Street.

In the 19th century, Philadelphia developed into a major industrial city. People from all over the world moved here and the population multiplied, already in the 1850s it exceeded the 500,000 mark and in the 1890s the million mark. The groups of Irish and Italian immigrants were particularly influential. In the vicinity of the latter, the Philadelphia Crime Family ("Philly Mob") developed as a mafia family within the American Cosa Nostra around 1911. The word Yo, which is now considered typical of the American colloquial language, is said to have appeared in the slang of the working class of Italian origin for the first time in the 1940s.

The population peaked at over 2 million in the 1950s. Subsequently, the population of the actual city of Philadelphia declined because many residents - especially the white middle class - moved to the suburbs (Suburbs) pulled. Instead, African-Americans and Puerto Ricans were increasingly concentrated in the - partly shabby - downtown districts.

People

The 6.2 million people who call the Philadelphia area home come from every corner of the world of every imaginable nationality. The influence of the most strongly represented groups is reflected in Philadelphia's “Irish Pubs”, the “Italian Market” and “Chinatown”. In the “Reading Terminal Market”, one of the best markets in the USA, you can still find sellers of various origins - from first-generation immigrants from Europe and Asia to the Amish families living in Pennsylvania.

Despite the size of the city, Philadelphia has very intact neighborhoods where people know each other and are always ready for a chat on the street. The atmosphere among the people is characterized by friendliness, which quickly gives visitors a feeling of home.

(Pop Culture

Numerous successful films are set in Philadelphia or were shot there. This includes the films of the RockySeries with Sylvester Stallone, the film Philadelphia 1993 with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington as well as the films by M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable - unbreakable, Split). The boxer Rocky Balboa is one of the most famous (fictional) residents of Philadelphia. Some tourists imitate Rocky's flight of stairs and cheering pose in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art ("Rocky Stairs"). The song comes from the soundtrack to the film Philadelphia Streets of Philadelphia, with which Bruce Springsteen set a musical monument for the city.

Phillysound or Philadelphia Soul is a variety of soul music that emerged in the early 1970s, and its best-known representatives include Lou Rawls and Barry White. Also the pop duo from Philadelphia Hall & Oates was influenced by it.

The 1 Philadelphia International AirportPhiladelphia International Airport im Reiseführer Wikivoyage in einer anderen SprachePhiladelphia International Airport in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaPhiladelphia International Airport im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsPhiladelphia International Airport (Q512128) in der Datenbank Wikidata(IATA: PHL) is one of the busiest airports in the American East with 29.5 million passengers a year. It is a hub for American Airlines and its regional subsidiary American Eagle. The low-cost line Frontier Airlines also offers many connections. There are direct connections from Central Europe to / from Frankfurt am Main (American or Lufthansa) and Munich (American). The most frequented connections within the USA are with Orlando, Atlanta and Chicago-O'Hare.

The arrivals and departures in Philadelphia are timed so quickly that in bad weather - which is not so rare here even in summer - the entire flight schedule can easily collapse. Many Americans who make frequent stopovers in Philadelphia hate this airport because they often miss their connecting flights. However, if you come from Europe and don't want to fly any further from Philadelphia, you can usually look forward to it calmly. And there is no alternative at all.

From the airport you can take a regional train Airport Line drive to the city center. The drive to Jefferson Station takes half an hour.

Public transportation

Philadelphia subway and subway lines
Broad Street Line Subway (Orange Line)

Philadelphia has one of the most comprehensive and widely used public transit systems in the United States. It is from the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) organized. This operates two underground or elevated railway lines (the orange Broad Street Line and the blue Market – Frankford Line), the S-Bahn-like route 100 to the northwestern suburb of Norristown (purple on the map), five tram lines (Trolleys)that run partly above ground and partly underground (green), two overland tram lines (101 and 102) that go to the south-western suburbs, three trolleybus routes (Trolleybus) and 121 normal bus routes.

A ride on the subway, tram, trolleybus, or bus costs $ 2.50. It can be paid for in cash in the appropriate means of transport (only appropriate!) Or you can buy one SEPTA Key Card, to which you can deposit a credit, from which the fare is then debited electronically (card costs $ 4.95 and includes the same amount as starting credit). Only with the key card can you get a connecting trip for 1 $ for transfer connections and you don't have to pay the full fare again. A One Day Convenience Pass costs $ 9 and is valid for up to eight trips by one person in a day. A Weekly TransPass costs $ 25.50 and is valid for up to 56 trips. With a Senior Key Card Eligible for free travel on all local and regional trains within Pennsylvania for those aged 65 and over.

An important transfer point is that 5 15th Street15th Street in der Enzyklopädie Wikipedia15th Street im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia Commons15th Street (Q4551050) in der Datenbank Wikidata (or City Hall Station: both underground lines, all underground tram lines, several bus lines). Here you can also change from one line to the other free of charge. The same applies to 13th Street and 30th Street, where you can change free of charge between the Market-Frankford Line (underground) and the tram.

There is also a regional train network for suburbs further out (SEPTA Regional Rail) with 13 lines and a total of 450 km of route network. The regional railways have their own tariffs, depending on how many of the four zones are crossed. The stop closest to the historic center is the 6 Jefferson StationJefferson Station in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaJefferson Station im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsJefferson Station (Q1900642) in der Datenbank Wikidata. There are also transfer options to the blue subway line and various bus routes.

The subway-like one does not belong to the SEPTA PATCO Speedline (red on map), which connects Philadelphia with the neighboring city of Camden (New Jersey) on the other side of the Delaware River. It is operated by the Port Authority Transit Corporation, a joint venture between the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. You can change between the PATCO Speedline and the two SEPTA subway lines at 7 8th & Market8th & Market in der Enzyklopädie Wikipedia8th & Market im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia Commons8th & Market (Q8255403) in der Datenbank Wikidata. On foot and by bike

Philadelphia is one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities in the United States. This applies in particular to the central districts (Center City) with the Avenue of the Arts and the areas around Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square and Logan Square.

Philadelphia is also one of the more bike-friendly cities in North America. Especially if you want to explore the districts to the west of the city center such as Fitler Square, Powelton Village, Spruce Hill or Cedar Park, the bicycle is the method of choice.

Independence Hall

Independence Hall

Built between 1732 and 1756 as the “State House” of Philadelphia, the Independence Hall is one of the best examples of the so-called “Georgian Style” and shows how the architecture of Philadelphia was based directly on England at that time. From 1776 to 1783 (with the exception of the winter of 1777/78 when Philadelphia was under British occupation) "Independence Hall" was the venue for the Second Continental Congress. In the so-called "Assembly Room" of the building, George Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army in 1775, and the United States' Declaration of Independence was passed on July 4, 1776. In the same room, the new America agreed on the appearance of its flag in 1777 and drafted the country's constitution in 1787.

No visit to Philadelphia is complete without a tour of Independence Hall. Admission is free. However, a so-called "Time Ticket" is required, which is available for the same day from 8:30 am at the Philadelphia's Visitor Center. The visitor center is just steps away on Market Street, between 5th and 6th Streets.

Liberty Bell

Liberty Bell

When William Penn created the Pennsylvania government, he encouraged citizens to participate in making laws. It also gives every citizen the right to choose their own religion. The colonists pride themselves on the freedom Penn gives them. In 1751, the Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly ordered a new bell for the State House. He asks for a Bible verse to be imprinted on the bell: “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof”. As the official bell of the State House (now Independence Hall), the Liberty Bell strikes many times for public proclamations.

The entire history and the Liberty Bell itself can be viewed today in the so-called Liberty Bell Center. It's right across from Independence Hall. Admission is free.
