Pianosa is an island in the Tuscan Archipelago Natural Park, off the coast of the Tuscany.

background

history

Pianosa comes from "Planasia" (flat island). It has a little more than 1,000 hectares, is located south of Elba and belongs to the Comune Campo nell'Elba (LI). You can get there by boat from Elba or Piombino.

There are traces of Roman and early Christian settlement, including catacombs. The Forte Taglia dates from the Napoleonic era. In the 19th century the Grand Duke of Tuscany converted the island into a penal colony with agricultural labor service, which later became a prison and in 1968 a maximum security prison, which was closed in the 1990s.

Since then, there have been efforts to open the island more to tourism, but currently it is only possible to explore it on day trips with a guide. In the village of Pianosa there is only a bar, no accommodation.

landscape

The stony, flat island looks very sparse and offers little shade, which should be considered on excursions in summer. The coast is beautiful and there are various swimming opportunities, including Cala S. Giovanni with white sand near the port, but also many other bays. Biologists and those interested can discover the island maquis including endemic species.

Spring is a good time to travel when many plants are in bloom.

getting there

By boat from Piombino or from Elba (Rio Marina, Marina di Campo). The cost of the ferry including a simple tour currently starts at € 25, additional activities and excursions can be booked.

In summer there are boat trips and day cruises from various port cities (e.g. Porto Azzurro), including visits to several islands of the archipelago, find out more on site.
